J 19, 2011 .DM. Tri-State Area — For 31 years, Unit- NEW YEAR’S COMMITMENT - BE A LIFESAVING HERO January is National Blood Donor ed Blood Services has honored the heroes among us who give the gift of life: blood. While many companies are trying to synthesize blood or re- produce its effects, today there is no substitute for human blood used in human transfusions. And every two seconds, someone needs blood. This year alone, more than fi ve million pa- tients will require blood transfusions as they recover from accidents or sur- gery or receive treatment for leuke- mia, cancer and other diseases. “At United Blood Services, we en- courage individuals to commit to fi nding the hero in themselves by giv- ing blood at least 3 times a year,” says Ann Trilby, United Blood Services Donor Recruitment Representative for the Tri-state area. “If all eligible people would make and keep that 3-time-a-year commitment, blood needs in the Tri-state region would always be met.” Month and United Blood Services is honoring donors by rewarding them for making and keeping their appoint- ment. Blood donors will earn a new level of commitment at three different levels — bronze, silver and gold. Each donation also earns points for shop- ping in the Hero in Me Rewards Store. Visit for more information. In order to donate, a person must be at least 17 years of age or older and in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 17 and not yet 18 must have a signed permis- sion form from a parent or guardian.
