For parents, finding age-appropriate tasks that teach responsibility and self-sufficiency can be hard. This is why the daily chore of lunch-packing is a good one to try. It can lead to less food waste. When kids pack their own lunch, they can choose what they like (within limits of course) so that less food gets wasted or comes back home uneaten. It teaches healthy meal planning. Packing their own lunch helps kids learn to make good eating choices. Make the food choices healthy and gently guide them. Kids packing their own lunches can also help start conversations about nutrition and healthy eating. how to pack a lunch (for kids) Here are some top tricks for packing a yummy, healthy lunch. have a basic formula. You adult can create a blueprint or formula to create a healthy lunch. It can be something like: 1 protein food + 1 starchy food + 2 other food choices + water The "other" food options are a fruit, a vegetable, a dairy product, or a healthy fat or dip (but at least one "other" must be a fruit or vegetable). make a list with options. Once you have a formula, you can make a list of ideas with your adult for each category, according to what you like best. Here are a few examples: Protein foods: turkey slices, hard-boiled egg, peanut butter, chicken salad, cheese stick, or cheese slices Starchy food: whole-grain bread slices, sandwich wrap, popcorn, pretzels, tortilla chips, pasta salad, crackers, beans, corn kernels, granola bar, and occasionally chips Fruit options: apple slices, grapes, orange, peach, pear, berries, fruit salad, or fruit cups in water or juice Vegetable options: baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, leftover roasted vegetables (such as green beans or carrots), cucumber slices, salad greens, lettuce wrap for sandwich, or salsa Dairy options: yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese stick, or milk Healthy fat or dip: hummus, guacamole, salad dressing, trail mix or nuts, or a small piece of chocolate Make a list and plan out your school lunch for each day of the week.
