In 1912, Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low gathered 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia to share what she had learned abroad about a new outdoor and educational program. With this, the Girl Scout organization was born. It has grown into a worldwide movement with 1.8 million girl members from coast to coast and around the globe. March Pi (Greek letter ""), is the symbol used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. So Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three digits of ! Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. Although only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi's infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize! How many digits of Pi do you know? Pi Day is a great day for math lovers to talk about their love of , recite the infinite digits of , and of course, to celebrate by eating (or maybe even throwing) PIE!! Some schools hold competitions to see which student can recall pi to the highest number of decimal places. AND…the 14th of March is also Albert Einstein's birthday, another reason for math enthusiasts to celebrate! march 14 National Pi Day 6 • march 2021 • www.officialkidsmag.com
