It's a kind of exaggeration. Here are pictures that show the literal (or actual) meanings of each of the idioms. Draw a line from the common meaning of the idiom to its literal meaning. RIGHT ON THE NOSE I arrived at 3:00 right on the nose. PAY THROUGH THE NOSE My mom paid through the nose for her new dress.
