junior Stormy Odle, who handled a lot of the quarterback duties last year. He completed 29 of 74 passes for 332 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed 104 times for 665 yards and nine touchdowns. Odle and junior Stone Mayberry have been competing and sharing time at the quarterback position, and both probably will play some of the position. Odle gives the Hornets a speed element while Mayberry is more of a traditional style quarter- back, Martin said. Both also could play some wide receiver and will likely be starters on defense. "Both will get a lot of playing time because they're both good players," Martin said. "There are certain situ- ations where you could see both of them on the field." Several different Hornets will car- ry the ball at running back to fill the void of the graduated Blake Gonza- les, who rushed for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns. Junior Trey Duncan, freshman Asaskey Pendry and junior Reece Beachamp. "We're going to miss Blake," Martin said. "These three guys are going to step up and fill that void for sure." Duncan is new to the position and has added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason, while the other two have their good qualities at the spot. "(Duncan has) actually gotten faster and developed," Martin said. "Pendry, even though he's a fresh- man, he's probably the strongest of the three. He's built like a bowling ball, what you want in a running back — short and strong. Reece will be the speed guy. … In sprints, he and Stormy are side-by-side." Senior Hayden Duncan will play an H-back position. Eyan Williams started as a fresh- man last year at tight end and car- ries a 6-3, 195 pound frame. "He's very smart and his work ethic is great," Martin said. "He's an all-around good kid, in school, in football, you name it." Junior Jerred Ford, a basketball player, will play some tight end after joining football during the offseason. Senior Dylan Davis leads the wide receiver corps from a split end po- sition. Davis led the team with 15 receptions for 267 yards last season. "He's probably going to be our most well-rounded receiver in terms of route running and hands," Martin said. Sophomore Jesse Martinez can play out wide, or he can also play H-back and running back, Martin said. Freshman Gabe Winfield is pro- jected as a starter on defense, but also will get some looks on offense at either H-back or wide receiver. Up front the Hornets return three seniors they'll depend on heavily in A.J. Nichols, George Phillips and Trenton Lynch. "Those three guys, they're going to be the three seniors we look to for continuous good play for us to be successful on offense." Positions could shuffle around, but Nichols will play a strong-side guard, while Phillips plays quick tackle and Lynch at the quick guard. Sophomore Sawyer Sherrell, who stands 6-2 and weighs 250 pounds, will line up at strong tackle. "He's a big strong kid who's still young and has room to grow," Martin said. "He's already proven himself." Seniors Zach Duncan and Kyle King will help on the offensive and defensive lines in various positions. Defensively, the Hornets will line up in a 3-4 formation with Martin calling the defensive plays. On the three-man defensive line, junior Eric Meyer will be the Hor- nets' nose guard in the middle. "He has had a good summer and really come on this last year," Mar- tin said. Phillips will play a strong end, while Trey Duncan will be a quick end. "Trey Duncan is not big for a line- man," Martin said. "But we put him at quick end because he's so strong and fast." Sophomore Gabe Leatherman can play a strong end, while freshman Anthony Martinez could be used at all three spots on the defensive line. Zach Duncan and King can play all three as well, and Sherrell gives the Hornets added depth on the strong side. "We've got quite a few linemen," Martin said. Hayden Duncan will man the Mike linebacker position with Lynch at the Will linebacker. Hayden Duncan was third on the team with 78 total tackles last year. Pendry, freshman Briar Mayberry and Trey Duncan can also play the middle linebacker positions. Williams mans an outside line- backer spot on the strong side. Stone Mayberry plays another outside line- backer spot with Beachamp provid- ing depth at the spot. Stone Mayberry finished with 68 tackles in 2019. Freshman Tyler Turney also is get- ting a look at linebacker. The Hornets will play two corner- backs with Davis at one corner and Odle at the other. Davis had 29 total tackles and two interceptions last season, while Odle had 33 tackles and one pick. Freshmen Tanner Revas and Tate Thomas also may get a look at cor- ner. Ford can also help at corner or safety. Martinez, who had 26 total tackles and one interception, will play a safety position along with freshman Winfield. Sophomore Bryan Minard and freshman Diego Trillo are also get- ting looks at safety. The Hornets are moving to a new district for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 cycle, District A-8, and will have an almost entirely new schedule. Colcord will play open at Dela- ware County rival Kansas on Thurs- day, Sept. 3, to open the season, followed by non district games at Afton and its home opener against Wyandotte on Sept. 18. Colcord will then play at Central Sallisaw, Warner, at Gore, Hulbert, at Talihina, Porter and at Canadian in district play. The Hornets played Porter each of the last two seasons in nondistrict games, winning both. Gore (10-2, 6-0) was the district A-8 champion last season. 2020 Football Preview Wednesday, August 26, 2020 n 23C Herald-Leader/Westside Eagle Observer COLCORD Continued from Page 22C Gary Comiskey/Special to the Herald-Leader Colcord's Stormy Odle runs for yardage against Kansas (Okla.) in both teams' 2019 season opener.
