By Graham Thomas Staff Writer n gthomas@nwadg.com KANSAS, Okla. — After starting 0-2 in District 2A-4 play last season, the Kansas Comets won three of their last five league games to advance to the Class 2A playoffs for the first time since 2013. Kansas picked up a 14-0 win against Chelsea and gutted out a 20-14 win at Wyandotte for a two-game winning streak in the middle of the season. A 50-26 win against Chouteau-Mazie earned the Comets a trip to the playoffs. The Comets (5-6) return several players from that team but also have a large number of ninth-graders heading into the 2020 season. "We had a lot of veteran guys last year, but we also have a lot returning this year," said coach Jimmy Dushane. "Hopefully we'll be able to build off that success." Of the 41 players on the Comets' roster, 17 are freshman. Dushane said the Comets will continue with a multiple offensive look. They can spread people out or line up in a Pro I-formation set. The Comets will look to Easton Wiggins, one of 10 seniors, to be a playmaker on offense in a number of different ways. Wiggins was the Comets' leading rusher with 75 carries for 420 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and six touchdowns last season. He also led the team in receiving with 33 recep- tions for 440 yards (13.3 yards per reception) and seven touchdowns. Wiggins (6-0, 165), a four-year starter, also is a capable quarterback, having played the position as a sophomore. "We're going to try and get the football to him," Dushane said. Senior William Hall (5-11, 190) started at tail- back early last year before being sidelined by injuries. He was limited to 27 carries for 79 yards last season. "He's back this year," Dushane said. "He's stronger and ready to go. I'm really looking for- ward to seeing him play."
