"He's a special kid," Martin said of Gonzales. "He's a playmaker. He's, fast, athletic, tough and makes good decisions. We thought that would be a good transition." Sophomore Stormy Odle (5-7, 135) will be the backup quarterback for Col- cord, which will run multiple sets under longtime coordinator Scott Hamby. "We're going to do the same stuff we did last year and go from there," Martin said. "Any season you adapt to what's working and what your strengths are. We have quite a few lineman. We'll pick up what was working last year and adapt and see where we're at." With Gonzales at quarterback, the Hornets will look to several players to fill his spot at running back. Senior Jaden Chandler (5-7, 175), freshman Jesse Martinez (5-6, 130) and junior Aidan Parker (5-8, 165) will share the load in the backfield. "They're unique in their own way," Martin said of the three running backs. "I think Jaden is going to be more of a power back, and Jesse Martinez is shifty. He's an exceptional athlete for how young he is. Aidan Parker is very physical too." Parker will be one of the Hornets' slot receivers along with junior classmate Dylan Davis (5-10, 140). Odle also works at receiver for the Hornets. At tight end, the Hornets like the size of senior Tyler Duncan (6-1, 230) and freshman Eyan Williams (6-3, 195). Junior A.J. Nichols (5-8, 240) starts at center on the offensive line, and junior Abran Still (6-1, 290) is the strong tackle while junior George Phillips (5-11, 215) is the strong guard. Junior Trenton Lynch (6-1, 155) mans the quick card while juniors Zach Duncan (5-11, 220) and Kyle King are battling at the quick guard spot. "We've got some beef and some good kids on the line," Martin said. "They love being a lineman." Defensively, Martin will be the de - fensive coordinator and will run a three-front with Still, Nichols and Tyler Duncan anchoring the defensive line. Still is the strong defensive end while Tyler Duncan is the quick end. Nichols is the nose guard, plugging the middle. "A.J. is a good one and there's two or three that we could put there and I'd feel comfortable with any of them," Martin said. Sophomore Eric Meyer (5-8, 245) and King also play nose. Freshman Sawyer Sherrell (6-1, 250) is getting a look at all three defensive line spots. The Hornets will deploy four line - backers most of the time, and some- times the outside linebackers can look like defensive ends. Chandler mans the strong outside linebacker spot, while Parker is the weakside backer. "They do everything right," Martin said of his outside backers. "They make great open field tackles. They're always around the ball and they're always physical." Junior Hayden Duncan (5-11, 200) and Lynch are working the inside line - backers. "We moved both those guys inside because they we were having trouble holding them back," Martin said. "They were wanting to go make tackles." Gonzales will start at one cornerback in the Hornets' secondary, while Davis will man the other corner spot. Odle and sophomore Stone Mayberry play the safety positions, but Martinez also may get a look there as well. "Any of those five guys I'm comfort - able putting anywhere," Martin said. The Hornets will be competing in District A-6, where they went 4-3 in league play last year. Rejoice Christian is considered the favorite in the con - ference after going 13-1 last year and advancing to the state semifinals. "They're going to be the team to watch," he said. Afton, Commerce, Fair - land, Ketchum, Oklahoma Union and Quapaw are also in the district. "I think it's a tough district," Martin said. "Commerce is always tough.
