2019 Football Preview Wednesday, August 28, 2019 n 17C Herald-Leader/Westside Eagle Observer of summer workouts because he had to work, Ortiz said, but once work ended he's been present ever since. "He's going to be another slot back, full-back position and outside lineback- er on defense," Ortiz. said. "He'll look like a defensive end but he's really an outside linebacker." Senior Lauro Molina is a return starter on the offensive and defensive lines. He'll play center on offense and defen- sive tackle. He also splits time between cheerleading and football. Another football player who splits time in cheerleading is senior Tony Trejo, who will play guard and defensive tackle. The Bulldogs will depend on Demian Merworth, another returner who will play offensive tackle and defensive tackle. "We're really se- nior-heavy this year and lineman-heavy this year," Ortiz said. "We're going to depend on our se - niors and lineman this year. That's an advantage for us and it will help us run the ball a lot." Senior Seth Rich will be a playmaker for the Bulldogs on the defensive side of the ball at a linebacker/strong safety position and he'll sub in on offense. Seth Coleman and Michael Boehm complete the senior class, while Carlos Perez is a junior and Edgar Herrera, Waylon Harrington, Malakhi Bartlett, Patrick Boehm and Jada Wilmoth are sophomores. "I feel good about this season," Ortiz said. "I think we'll be more prepared and we're going to match up with peo - ple better and be in better position to win games. We have the ability to score points. Now we just have to turn that into wins." 74 • Javier Perez 62 • Michael Boehm 13 • Samuel Philpott 60 • Tony Trejo 64 • Lauro Molina 85 • Seth Rich 12 • Bryson Funk 49 • Carlos Hernandez Decatur Coach James Ortiz DeCaTuR Continued from Page 15C OAKS, Okla. — There's reason for ex- citement about football at Oaks-Mis- sion (Okla.) this fall. The Warriors, who were 0-10 in 2017, rebounded to win three games and make the Oklahoma Class B playoffs in 2018. Oaks boasts a large sophomore class that also bodes well for the future. "I'm excited," said coach C.D. Thompson. "My freshman are now sophomores and that's my most excit- ing thing. I've got decent-sized line- men. We're more mature." The Warriors open the season Aug. 30 at home against Gans. With 21 players on the roster at presstime, nearly half were sopho- mores and another talented group is coming up through the junior high ranks. Oaks has five seniors in quarterback Aaron Budder and linemen Jackson Ross, Warren Chewey, Jarred Kingfish- er and Isaac Foreman. Budder (5-9, 150) will take over the quarterback duties after playing wide receiver and some quarterback last year for the Warriors. Thompson said Budder was named the MVP at North- eastern Oklahoma team camp during the summer. "He will be do- ing the majority of the quarterback role," Thompson said. "Budder can run. He's cagey. He's tougher than a box of hammers. I've seen him U-shaped, folded all sorts of ways, sit out two plays and be ready to go." Thompson Budder and the Warriors offense will once again work out of the I-forma- tion, but they like to spread the field as well, which should open up running lanes for Budder. It helps that the Warriors have some beef on the offensive line. Ross (6-0) starts at guard and "ain't nobody outworking Jackson Ross," Thompson said. Chewey (5-10, 280) will not be available until later in the season, but when he comes back he'll play several offensive line positions. See Oaks on Page 21C
