January 16, 2013 www.DesertMessenger.com The other program that the Parker Public Library will be presenting is Southwestern Rock Calendars and Ancient Time Pieces, Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the La Paz County Board Room, 1108 Joshua Ave., Parker. In this presentation, Archaeologist Allen Dart discusses the historically known sky-watching practices of various southwestern peoples, and how their ancestors' observations of the heavens may have been commemorated in ancient architecture and rock symbols. The program illustrates cardinal, solstice, and equinox alignments and the possible calendrical reckoning features at such places as Arizona's Casa Grande Ruins and Picture Rocks petroglyphs sites, New Mexico's Chaco Canyon, the Hovenweep area of Utah, and mesa Verde and Chimney Rock regions of Colorado. This free program is sponsored by The Parker Area Historical Society and the Parker Friends of the Library and was made possible by the Arizona Humanities Council. It's probably too late to pick up a book to read, but the discussion is open to those who would like to listen in. The discussion will be led by local resident George White. To further explore this classic, there will be a follow up program by the Arizona Curriculum Theater, Jan. 31, 1:00 p.m. at the La Paz County Board Room, 1108 Joshua Ave., Parker. The 45 minute presentation, given by James D. Porter, will combine a dramatic reading of Chapter one of The Grapes of Wrath with images from the dust bowl, and another dramatic reading of Chapter 25 with images from period California agriculture including photos of migrant workers from some of the California work camps.
