MARCH 2-8, 2016 UCW 29 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM I didn't think that I would ever forgive Ryan Reynolds. First he starred in the garbage dump known as Green Lantern, then he played Wade Wilson in the frankly terrible Wolverine: Origins movie. I couldn't work up any enthusiasm for him starring in Deadpool (108 minutes), and then I saw some of the trailers, and my friends buzzed about it, and I thought, well, maybe it won't suck. I forgive you for acting in some terrible movies, Ryan Reynolds. Turns out I was way underestimating just how good Deadpool was going to be. With the exception of Colossus (Stefan Kapicic). His thick Russian accent and lack of charisma made me sad. The film opens with a slo-mo sequence set to Juice Newton's "Angel of the Morning," but I'd swear just touch my cheek before you leave me was changed to just punch my teeth before you leave me, although some pretty exhaustive Internet searches suggest I was hearing it wrong. Once the adorably subversive opening credits finish, the story backtracks to Deadpool's origin story. A mercenary with a heart of gold named Wade Wilson hangs out at the mercenary bar with his buddy Weasel (T.J. Miller). He meets Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin), falls in love, and nature takes its course straight to terminal cancer. After the make-up guys make him look really pale to indicate that Cancer is Happening, Wilson breaks up with Vanessa. He disappears into the Weapon X program, where is he injected with an experimental super soldier mutation agent of some kind, designed to activate any latent mutant powers when his body is subjected to enough stress/torture. That makes sense because Shut Up. Lead Torture Guy Ajax (Ed Skrein) and his sidekick Angel Dust (Gina Carano) laugh evilly while performing evilness upon the body of Wilson, finally activating his mutant powers of becoming a literal cancer—by which I mean the make-up guys make his face look tumorous and now he has such effective healing powers that he is functionally immortal. Like Wolverine, but taller, with a gross face. Now called Deadpool, he decides to track down Ajax so he can look pretty again. After a mid-movie fight scene, the story gets back to the scene from the opening credits. Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) interrupt Deadpool before he can finish interrogating Ajax. They attempt to drag him back to the X-Mansion in chains, but he quips his way to freedom and jumps off a bridge, freeing himself just in time to make the big climax of the film. While it's not for kids, it is up there with Guardians of the Galaxy in terms of redefining the possibilities of a comic book movie. The Marvel Cinematic Universe tends to take a middle-of-the-road approach, eliminating some of the more extravagant violence from the stories in order to get a family- friendly rating, in the mistaken belief that an R rated film won't earn as much. Now that Deadpool has disabused Hollywood of that notion maybe we'll get more challenging, adult-oriented fare in the X-Universe film franchise. And yes, there is an after-credits sequence.
