CHIPTHOMPSON—DAILYNEWS The Cardinals' Alex Davila (4) runs the ball against Yreka Friday night. ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter CORNING In what amounted to a play-in game for a birth in the post season, the Yreka Miners got on the board first but wouldn't score the rest of the night as the Corning Cardinals took a 28-8 victory at home to close out the season. "We earned ourselves another game," coach John Studer told his players after the win. "If we do it right, we can play again the fol- lowing week. Right now the re- cords are out the window, we're all 0-0." Corning took opening kickoff but neither team could sustain a drive for long in the first quarter, but when Miners punt bounced off a Cardinal player the Miners fell on the ball and took over deep in Corning territory. The Miners took it in for the score and made the 2-point conversion. On the next possession, Alex Davila got loose for a 51-yard run to the Yreka 9 yard line and then carried it in for the score on the next play. Cardinals trailed 8-7 with 5 minutes left in the first. The turning point in the game came on the next drive when the Miners turned it over on downs, but lost back-up quarterback and leading rusher Drew Kannely-ro- bles to injury. "That's a tough thing to see," Studer said following the game. "No coach wants to see a game decided by an injury." Drew Fissori hauled in a 27- yard catch to the Miners 33 to start the second. Wyatt Hayden took it inside the red zone with a keeper and Davila scampered in from the 15 for another score. The Cardinals went up 14-8. Yreka's first string quarter- back Juan Cota wasn't suited for the game so third-stringer Daw- son Fraley came in to take snaps on the next series. Fraley couldn't move the ball on the ground so he turned to the passing game and found some success, but the drive ended with a punt. On the next play, Davila broke FOOTBALL CardsearnplayoffberthinYrekavictory "That's a tough thing to see. No coach wants to see a game decided by an injury." – Cardinals coach John Studer. Staff report RED BLUFF The Spartans closed out a difficult season Friday night with a 49-13 home loss to league powerhouse Pleasant Valley. Capping a 1-9 season, the Spar- tans showed plenty of offensive firepower as they have all year, but were unable to keep the Vi- kings out of the end zone early, going down 42-7 in the first half. Junior Wesley Clawson was named the overall player of the game and Lane Pritchard the of- fensive player of the game. Clawson was 22 for 49 on the night for 316 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for 12 yards on 3 carries. Pritchard had 8 catches for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cam- eron Ortega caught 7 passes for 74 yards and Loen Langley had 2 grabs for 85 yards. Sophomore Ian Hagen was 1 for 1 on point after attempts. The win means the South No. 1 seed Warriors will host the North No. 2 seed Big Valley Cardinals at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Parish School in Red Bluff. The scoring came early and of- ten for the Warriors standouts, in- cluding Al House and Teddy Ran- berg, and the Warriors put up 30 in the first quarter and 27 in the second, to go in to halftime up 57-16. Ranberg took the second half kickoff in for a score, but it came back on a procedure penalty. House would carry it into the end zone just 90 seconds later, though. The Bulldogs were clearly out- matched and banged up in the second half and struggled to hold onto, much less move, the ball. A late safety, another Ranberg touchdown and a Richie Borges field goal were icing on the win in the second half. On the final series for the War- riors, House would take a knee and turn it over on downs with about 30 seconds left to play. A desperation pass by the Bulldogs resulted in an interception to close out the victory. House put up 296 yards on 10 carries and 6 touchdowns. Ranberg had 25 yards on 17 carries and 4 touchdowns and 20 yards in kick returns. Brian Grace carried the ball 6 times for 39 yards.
