INTERVIEW Lo ca l au th or t o ap pe ar o n ra di o sh ow Eddie, a scruffy 9-month- old stray dog, had a rough start to life. Recently hit by a car, he was taken to an an- imal shelter unable to walk. X-rays revealed a fracture in his left hind leg. Luckily for Eddie, he was accepted into the Frac- ture Program at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. This program provides surgi- cal treatment of simple fractures for young shel- ter and rescue dogs and cats who are otherwise healthy. The surgeries are performed by board- certified veterinary sur- geons and residents, and are used as teaching mod- els for veterinary students to observe. The fracture program, however, is in need of funding, and may soon go away, leaving dogs like Ed- die without options, as the shelters and rescue groups normally cannot afford these surgeries. While the veterinarians donate their time for the surgeries, the costs of sur- gical equipment, supplies and anesthesia need to be covered. The School of Vet- erinary Medicine estab- lished the Shelter and Res- cue Fracture Surgery Pro- gram Fund some time ago with donations, but as those funds are depleting, stu- dents are launching a grass- roots fundraising effort to save one of their surgical teaching models. As for Eddie, his success- ful surgery placed three pins in his left femur to repair the fracture. Judy, a staff member looking to adopt a dog, fell in love with Eddie the moment she met him, and gave Ed- die his forever home. The UC Davis Fracture program has repaired more than 450 fractures in shel- ter and rescue animals. Information on dona- tions to the program can be found at https://se- cure.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ public/E_Gifts_vm/gift_ options/small_animal. cfm?fndShow=223.
