AT YOUR NEXT hOLIDAY BASh The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer and that means that Fall is upon us. It is a great time to get that bike out for one more ride. North Carolina has a lot to offer, and there is nothing more beautiful than the Blue Ridge Parkway and the mountains when the leaves are changing. Grandfather Mountain has a beautiful ride and great views. The state recently acquired land that made it a state park. There is still the attraction side of the mountain, which includes the Mile High Swinging Bridge and a wildlife habitat. At 5,946 feet, it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains. The Grandfather Mountain State Park does not encompass the private Grandfather Mountain attraction, though the state park trails can be accessed from parking areas at the attraction. As a way to guarantee that Grandfather Mountain will remain in its current state forever and assure the public continued access to its peaks, the owners of the attraction established the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. The Grandfather Mountain attraction will continue to operate as it has since the 1950s, alongside the new state park but under the management of the foundation. As you head south you have to head up to Mount Mitchell. Mount Mitchell is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. At 6,684 feet, in elevation, you will need to bring some warm clothes. At the top, you will find a new observation tower, which provides a 360-degree view. The new tower is handicapped accessible. Asheville has a very cool vibe to its downtown area with great food and entertainment. Asheville is also home to The Biltmore Estates. There you can see the largest private home in the U.S. The Biltmore also has the Antler Hill Village & Winery. Remember, no drinking and driving. Maggie Valley has the Wheels Through Time Museum. Wheels Through Time is home to the world's premier collection of rare American vintage motorcycles. Wheels Through Time houses more than 300 of America's rarest and most historic classic motorcycles, with over 24 marques on display, including the likes of Harley-Davidson, Indian, Excelsior, Crocker, Henderson, and more. They also feature dozens of motorcycle-related exhibits, ranging from board track racers, hill climbing and original paint machines to American dirt track racing, choppers and bobbers and one-of-a-kind motorcycles. Cherokee is in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. You can whip over to Gatlinburg and visit the Smoky Mountain National Park. The park was chartered by the United States Congress in 1934 and officially dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940. It encompasses 522,419 acres (816.28 square miles), making it one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The main park entrances are located along U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) at the towns of Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Cherokee, N.C. The Smoky Mountain National Park is the most visited National Park in the country. Once you go there, you will know why. If you have made it that far then you are only a few miles away from Deal's Gap and the Tail of the Dragon. The Dragon has 318 curves in 11 miles and is one of the country's top motorcycle destinations. It is also one of the most dangerous roads in the country. Not because of the curves but because of the riders, cars and trucks. Big trucks, like 18-wheelers, that take up the entire road. This road is a beautiful ride but you have to watch your speed and the speed limit. Keep your eyes on the road and be able to see where you are going. Plan on danger around every corner. The road is narrow and tight on the curves. At times, truckers will take this highway because their GPS tells them that it is the shortest route. You do not want to get caught under one of those rigs. If you can travel up there, you may want to plan ahead to find a room.
