FAYETTEVILLE CITY COUNCIL Kathy Jensen, District 1 UCW: In your opinion what is the number one issue facing the City of Fayetteville? Leadership. Many of the issues that face the City of Fayetteville can be solved with commitment, understanding and consensus. Crime can be curtailed with a unified vision of elected officials who are committed to solving this issue. Our police and citizens need clear directives and not rhetoric that sound good as a sound bite or campaign slogan. Leadership and consensus will encourage business growth and jobs. Confidence in the elected officials and their vision is the cornerstone to a vibrant and successful community. UCW: What can realistically be done to decrease the crime rate in our community? Crime is everyone's problem. It starts from our children in elementary school all the way to the police chief. We need to become organized and take charge of our neighborhoods. Many neighborhoods have started neighborhood watches in their communities and crime has decreased drastically. We need to support our citizens and give them the knowledge to help everyone be involved. Chief Medlock is a believer in technology to combat crime and I am in total favor of his decision and look forward to supporting a safer Fayetteville. I am for reducing crime, but raising property taxes is not a solution. I have never witnessed an ineffective program be made successful by simply throwing more money at it. UCW: The Fayetteville City Council has teamed with the Chamber of Commerce on Economic Development — how can more businesses be attracted to the city and what economic development initiatives would you endorse? The city of Fayetteville needs to be more business friendly and customer service needs to be improved for business owners already here and the new businesses that want to come to Fayetteville. We need to support small businesses and make them welcome and let them know that we appreciate that they have chosen to risk their financial assets and come to our city. We need JOBS. It is a proven fact that higher unemployment rates equal high crime. More Jobs=Less Crime. UCW: With diminishing federal funding, how can Fayetteville continue to provide quality services and where /how can alternate funding be raised? We have to increase our tax base. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! UCW: What is your vision for the city's Parks and Recreation? This is a perfect question for me. I have three boys that have grown up in the City of Fayetteville Parks and Recreation programs. With my experience on the Tourism Development Authority, I do understand the impact a $60 million facility would bring to the table, but I also understand that we need to stop telling our citizens what the need and listening to what they want. UCW: In your opinion, what qualifies you to make hard decisions for the people of Fayetteville? I am a lifelong resident of District 1 and the City of Fayetteville, I was born here, educated here, opened my business here and am raising my children here. I am a businesswoman, a mother of five, a wife of a retired soldier and a community volunteer who has been appointed to many boards to help run this city. As a small business owner, I have learned to plan for the future. I understand decisions and policies made today will impact the next generations. It is my focus that my children will have the same opportunities in Fayetteville that they would have in Raleigh or any other thriving city with jobs, unsurpassed development and a great quality of life for my children and grandchildren.
