CUMBERLAND Uninsured Children Can Get Free Flu Shots The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is offering free flu shots to uninsured children six months to 18 years old. Other individuals may receive a flu shot at no out-of-pocket cost to them if they have Medicare, Medicaid, North Carolina Health Choice or Blue Cross Blue Shield because the health department will file the claim for them. All other patients will pay at the time of service. Individuals with other types of insurance will be given the necessary reimbursement paperwork to file with their providers. While flu can have serious implications even for healthy people, flu complications are most common among very young children and people over 50, as well as people with chronic health conditions and pregnant women Clinic hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Friday hours are 8 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and by appointment only on Friday afternoon. The Health Department offers evening hours only for immunizations on Tuesdays until 6:30 p.m. The Health Department is located at 1235 Ramsey St. For more information, call 433-3600. County Offices Closed Nov. 11 Cumberland County Government offices will be closed on Nov. 11 for the Veterans Day holiday. This closing includes all Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center locations; the Animal Control Shelter; Ann Street Landfill, Wilkes Road Yard Waste Facility and all Solid Waste Management container sites and recycling centers. Library customers who wish to return materials while the system is closed can use the book drops located outside all branches. Library To Host Writers' Workshop Nov. 2 The Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center will host its first day-long writers' workshop Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Pate Room at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. The writers' workshop will feature nationally prominent authors and professional writing instructors who will offer practical advice on how to improve writing and find audiences. The presenters include Fayetteville State University professor and award-winning author Carole Boston Weatherford, who will talk about writing for children. Other presenters include Sabrina Jeffries on historical Weatherford romance; Annette Dunlap on memoir researching; Susan Sloate on "Living the Writer's Life" and marketing; and Robert Wynn on general fiction. The workshop is recommended for authors in all stages of their careers, whether they are interested in traditional publishing or e-books. Authors will be available for book signings. Early Voting Runs Through Nov. 2 Early one-stop voting for the Nov. 5 municipal election in Cumberland County and will continue through Nov. 2. The only location for early voting is the Cumberland County Board of Elections, 227 Fountainhead Lane. Early voting hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The election is for all nine municipalities in Cumberland County and the Eastover Sanitary District. A list of candidates is available on the Board of Elections website under the Notice of Municipal Election link.
