F CUS On "Run United" Zombie Fun Run City Residents to Receive Schedules by Mail City residents need to watch their mailboxes the first week of November for an important envelope. The envelope will contain the City's loose leaf collection schedule for this year and the holiday solid waste collection schedule for 2013-2014. "This is a change in the way we distribute this information and we want to let residents know to look for the envelope in the mail this year," said Jerry Dietzen, Environmental Services director. This year, "Slow and Steady" may win the race… but it won't protect you from the zombies. On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Fayetteville Police Department and the City of Fayetteville are sponsoring "Run United," a Zombie 5K Fun Run and Walk to benefit the United Way of Cumberland County. Participants will wind their way through Haymount as they avoid roaming hordes of zombies. Participants can pre-register for the event by visiting www.active.com, www.runsignup.com or www.prerace.com and enter the keyword "Run United" (online processing fee applies). The registration fee is $25 and runners who pre-register will receive a T-shirt. T-shirts are also available during same day registration, while supplies last. Registration starts at 5 p.m. and the run will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Honeycutt Park, located at 352 Devers St. There will be door prizes, goody bags, medals and a costume contest. ® Come out and help support the United Way as we run, from the zombies, for a good cause. He added that, previously, stickers and hang tags were distributed by hand. Dietzen also said that while it was a good system, the method was sometimes hampered by weather challenges or carts that aren't out every week. Additionally, the use of automated trucks operated by one person supported the change in delivery systems. Mailing will put the information into all single family homes in the city limits. The envelope to watch for is the standard size, white, with the City logo as the return address and a large message printed on the front that says: Please Do Not Throw Away! Three City departments and Waste Management have partnered on this project. The three City departments include: Parks & Recreation is responsible for the City's loose leaf collection; Stormwater Division is including a brochure on their stormwater management programs; and Environmental Services has the holiday collection schedule and a general brochure of services. For more information, please call (910) 433-1329 (1FAY). Loose Leaf Season Right Around the Corner The 2013-2014 Loose Leaf Pickup Season is right around the corner, scheduled to run from Dec. 2 to March 3. The City of Fayetteville will distribute hangtags on residents' doors and unveil a webpage devoted to the service. The hangtags will show which dates neighborhoods will be serviced with loose leaf pickup. To participate in Loose Leaf Pickup Season, citizens should rake leaves and pine straw curbside by day prior to their pickup date. Leaves and pine straw are the only acceptable items to be collected - no tree limbs. The leaves and pine straw should be placed on the top of the curb away from storm drains and out of the road. Bad weather may cause delays. During Loose Leaf Pickup Season, citizens can pick up trash bags at any recreation center or fire station. Citizens do not have to wait until Loose Leaf Pickup Season to have loose leaves picked up. If they put leaves out in sturdy bags or containers on their regular yard debris day, they will be picked up weekly. This also helps keep leaves out of the storm drains. For questions, citizens can call (910) 433-1532 or (910) 433-1FAY (1329).
