The event offered Dine In and Take Out. The meal included BBQ Pork and Chicken or Half and Half, french fries, hushpup- pies, slaw, buns and dessert. Jeff Melton photo The full moon was so bright earlier this month that it woke me up about four o'clock in the morning. Normally that doesn't happen. But my wife and I had left the blinds open. Then, I rolled over on my right side, facing the window which I rarely do. I usually sleep on my stomach. Finally, the moon reached just the right position in the night sky so that its moonbeam was literally at the perfect angle to shine on me. A rather strange happening, wouldn't you say? Three different things converged perfectly to wake me up or else I would have missed the brilliant moonlight. Sometimes life gets bright like that, doesn't it? But maybe you didn't open the blinds to your mind so the light can get through. Or, maybe you turn your back on some very bright opportunities because you're afraid of failing. Or, maybe you don't see the perfect angle on a situation because you're not in the best position. Today, open and turn yourself so you Live Positive clearly and enjoy the best your life has to offer. LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette How bright is your life? Robbie Brown made sure ther were plenty of french fries at the Sulphur Springs Methodist Church BBQ on Saturday, October 14th. Jeff Melton photo You can play a vital role in helping survivors of domestic violence. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, learn how you can be a better ally for the survivors in your life. 1. Initiate the conver- sation: Talk with them privately about the abuse. Don't force them; let them know it is safe to talk to you. 2. Believe them: Many victims fear not being be- lieved. Express that you hear them and believe what they're telling you. 3. Listen without judg- ment: Survivors can feel shame for what's hap- pened. Don't judge them for their past experiences or decisions. 4. Validate their expe- rience: Survivors want to be heard. Practice active listening skills and vali- date what they are telling you. 5. Ask how they want to be supported: Be sure to ask them what they want and need. Don't im- pose your thoughts and feelings on them. 6. Build on their strengths: Survivors are strong! Point out the ways in which they have adapted to solve prob- lems, develop courage, and stay determined. 7. Support their deci- sion: Show support for the decisions a survivor makes. They know their relationship best and the risks they feel comfortable taking. 8. Give them control: Give survivors control and don't dictate what they should do. Empower them to make their own decisions. 9. Take it seriously: Domestic violence can be deadly. Always take it seriously and follow these tips when helping a survi- vor. If you are concerned about safety, you can say: "Your situation sounds dangerous, and I'm con- cerned about your safety. How can I help?"
