The announcement says that Senate Bill 747 requires absentee bal- lots to be accepted by the Election Day deadline, strengthens the rights of poll observers, prohibits election officials from ac- cepting private money to administer elections, launches a pilot program for select counties to use signature verification soft- ware for absentee ballots, improves voter registration rolls by establishing a pro- cess for periodic removal of ineligible voters, including the deceased, convicted felons, and those who have moved, and closes the same-day registration loophole. North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore said, "North Carolina voters de- serve to know their elec- tions are safe and secure. Thankfully they can have that confidence now that we have overridden the Governor's veto of this commonsense elections bill." This year marks the 40th anniversary of Minority Enterprise De- velopment Week. Founded in 1983, the occasion also recognizes and celebrates the achievements and im- pacts of minority entrepre- neurs in communities across North Carolina, and further provides opportunities for networking, expanding, and strengthening businesses. In keeping with its mission to support entrepreneurship through capacity building, education and networking, the Cleveland County Busi- ness Development Center (CCBDC) has been a lead sponsor for MED Week for the past 24 years. To raise greater awareness, CCBDC has also teamed with other local organizations to raise awareness, promote edu- cation, encourage self-suffi - ciency and improve quality of life. Other 2023 participating partners in this collaborative celebration event includes the Cleveland Emerging Leaders Academy, CORE Community Coalition, Com- munity Math Academy, Di- vine Nine Group of Cleve Co, Faith harvest Church and Cleve Co. NAACP. This year's theme, "The New Wave of Entrepreneur- ship: The Under 40 Lead- ers is intended to focus on celebrating the emergence of a new generation of ris- ing stars and leaders of the future who also have con- tributed to the economic growth and betterment of this community. CCBDC was also committed to supporting leadership capacity building, small business ownership, job training initiatives, histor- ically underutilized business participation and education enrichment programs. More- over, CCBDC has also been a leading advocate of minori- ty business development, fostering leadership skills, and youth development. This year, the celebration will kick-off the week of ob- servance with Communi- ty Conversation on Digital economy and broadband ex- pansion. The program will be held on Saturday, October 21 at Faith Harvest Church lo- cated 1001 Buffalo Street in Shelby starting at 10:30 am. The guest speaker for the oc- casion will be Annette Taylor, Director of Digital Equity & Literacy for NC Department of Information & Technology. The week of celebration will culminate on Thursday, October 26 with the Annu- al Awards Dinner, featuring Tunya Smith, Director of the Offi ce of Civil Rights with the NC Dept of Transportation. The event will be held at the Legrand Center starting at 5:45 pm with a reception fol- lowed by dinner and award presentations. The occasion will bring together small business owners, local offi cials, and community stakeholders to honor and commemorate ac- complishments of small busi- ness owners, local citizens and community partners. The week of celebration will culminate with the Annual Awards Dinner, featuring Tunya Smith, Director of the Offi ce of Civil Rights with the NC Dept of Transportation. "We certainly have a rich history of community en- gagement over the years," says Executive Director Richard Hooker. "In addition to hosting numerous MED Week events, CCBDC has conducted numerous educa- tion workshops, leadership forums, small business rec- ognitions, youth outreach, the Emerging Leaders Acad- emy and participation in state-wide executive confer- ences," noted Hooker. CCBDC is now accepting nominations for the Top 20 Under 40 Awards for individ- uals or businesses who are under 40 years. To be eligible for consideration in the Top 40 Under 40 Class of 2023, nominees must be over the age of 18 and UNDER the age of 40 on October 1, 2023. Cooper's veto of SB 747 The Nor th Carolina House of Representatives gave bipartisan approval to House Resolution 897, which extends support for the nation of Israel in light of the recent attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians. NC House Speaker Tim Moore said, "Yester- day, the North Carolina House of Representatives gave bipartisan approval to House Resolution 897, which extends our support to Israel in light of the re- cent attacks on their citi- zens by Hamas terrorists. The resolution also urges Congress and the Biden administration to extend our financial, intelligence, and any other support re- quired by our friend Israel." He said, "For most of us, this was a simple choice: Denounce evil or walk away. Unfortunately, 12 of our members chose to take a walk. I chose to take a stand.
