December 19, 2012 www.DesertMessenger.com QES Superintendent's contract renewed by Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Quartzsite Elementary School (QES) Board members voted 3-1 to renew Superintendent Jacquline Price's contract during Tuesday, Dec. 11th regular meeting. After a executive session, the members voted without any discussion. Board member Monica Timberlake voted against the extension of the three year contract which included a raise. In her very first meeting, newly appointed QES Board member Barbara Corral made the motion to extend the contract. Corral, who served on the board until being voted out in 2010, was recently appointed to the board by La Paz County Superintendent Janice Shelton. Corral fills the vacancy left when Christy Carter became a staff member. According to the Arizona Republic QES was among thirteen publicschool districts whose final grades were announced Oct. 1st, two months after the state's other 572 districts and charters got theirs. According to the Oct. 31st article, QES received a D (while Ehrenberg received a C) rating on their School Report Card for 20112012. However, the Arizona Department of Education (AZEd) has since change QES score to a "Not Rated" while awaiting results from missing test scores. To add to confusion, the C & D scores still show for Quartzsite and Ehrenberg schools in the public search on AZed.com website, but the updated detailed spread sheet shows the "Not Rated" score along with a few other Arizona schools. Price explained, "With this new system, two teachers mistakenly wrote the wrong code on score sheets, but the state said they would address the issue promptly… that was in June!" According to Price, "there should have been 12 student scores, but the state showed only 3 in math and none in reading scores." Both Ehrenburg and Quartzsite Elementary Schools were affected by the mixup, so both schools now show "Not Rated." Price expects to have the results, "hopefully in January." Governor Brewer signed SB 1286, A-F Letter Grade System, into law in 2010, after it was passed by the Ari- zona state legislature. The A-F Letter Grade System was created to provide clear, easy-to understand information to parents so that they could base their educational decisions on the best information available about the overall academic performance of schools and districts/charter holders. The A-F Letter Grade System uses a combination of students' scores on the AIMS tests (50 percent) and the academic growth of students from one year to the next (50 percent). Price said, "We advocate the Quartzsite District with the AZED regularly, sometimes daily." Rainbow Acres golf #3 Quartzsite, AZ We had another good turnout for Rainbow Acres golf despite the gusty winds that blew. First place was won by Con Smith and Cletus Winkler with an 18 under score of 38. Con had 2 holes-in-one to help out in the victory. Second place for the day was won by Jerry Taylor and his 5-yr. old grandson, Brady Taylor Cradduck who helped on several chip shots. Third place went to Dino Linder and Gary McGowan who fired a 41. Gary had a hole in one on #7 to help in their finish. Shooting 42 for a 4th place finish were Bill Toner and Mike Stegeman. The most popular score of the day was 43 with 5 teams having to battle it out for 5th place. Bud Key and Bruce Scott took the honors over Robert Webb & Darlene Aitken, Harvey Gibson & Richard Webb, Debbie Jensen & Gene Howard, & Larry Krohling and George Lische. Lee Christner scored an amazing holein-one on the par 4 #16 hole. Closest to the pin for the women on #2 was Debbie Jensen and closest to the pin for the men on #8 was Larry Jensen. Long drive for the men on #13 was a tie between Bud Key, Lee Christner, & Harvey Gibson. Our next tournament is Dec. 27. Remember we have changed the starting time from 9:00 to 10:00am.
