Main St., Quartzsite 928-927-8081 Hi Jolly Cemetery Pioneers Who were They? By Dinice Ross, Hi Jolly Cemetery, Records/Historian Part 2 Angela Gonzales Scott – You can't help but admire Angela and her husband William Scott's tenacity for survival. Flooding, Drought, Banks failing, Death, Game and Fish closing grazing rights, WWII – it sounds so familiar now in 2012, but in the 1920's and 1930's, families grew closer, stayed closer and time marched on. Headstone reads: SCOTT W. E. ANGELA G. 1862 – 1933 1882 -- 1966 Angelita (Angela) Gonzales Scott Born: 2/22/1882 in Yuma. Died: 3/25/1966 at Parkview Baptist Hospital, Yuma, at age 84. Buried: Hi Jolly Pioneer Cemetery, Plot 75. During the years when sons Ben and Tom Scott were in the services and most of the other boys were off working at their jobs, Angela would not turn away any cowboys who were looking for a job or a meal – She would have them ride with a horse and a running iron in hand (which was a long rod with a hook on the end- used in branding) and have them hook the mistletoe out of all the trees along Tyson Wash going to picture rock and back to Quartzsite to help feed the cattle. (There was no hay to be bought.) The cowboys would have a good meal and maybe the cattle too! On August 8, 1933, Wm. Scott passed away at home, leaving Angela to hold the family and business together. She retained the grazing lease for her cattle; this was open range with watering tanks at various places. One of the watering tanks was the Lead Well. At most tanks there were corrals with windmills for water and little one-room houses which were used for cooking and sleeping. She and sons Joe and Ben continued their cattle operation while the other sons kept the Grocery Store and Bar business going. (She eventually turned the store over to her son David.) In the early 30's, with a base heard of about 450 cattle, all the cattle had to be sold because of a change in the grazing laws by BLM on open Range. Game & Fish moved all the cattle out of the KOFA Range and took over all the windmills, bunk and hay houses, cattle pens and tanks. At that time the price of cattle was at an all time low, so once again the Scott Family was on the losing end on money. The BLM is still using the water wells to water all the wildlife on the KOFA Range just as the Scott Family had done for so many years. When she was 84 years old she was still interested in mining and would December 19, 2012 spend weekends out on her mine. She would pick, shovel and haul the rock in boxes. Her son, Jesse, would pick her up on Sundays and bring her home. During the week, sitting on her back porch, she would grind the rock and pan the gold, putting the gold in little bottles of water. Everyone for miles around knew and loved Angela Scott. After a long, happy productive life, on March 25, 1966 Angela Scott passed away. Together, Angela and William made much of the history of this area. I would like to thank Frank Scott for filling in the holes, adding facts and straightening the time lines – much of the "Scott's miniseries" are from his footnotes. Thanks again, it has been very much appreciated!
