One of the University's oldest and largest student organizations, The Animal Science Club was started in 1936 by students interested in promoting the livestock industries in North Carolina, and in providing interactions among students, faculty, and livestock producers. Presently, the Animal Science Club has over 100 active members, and thousands of alumni. It is an affiliate of the National Block and Bridle Club. The Animal Science Club is composed of people from all majors and backgrounds. Their goals are: a) to enhance knowledge, promote interests, and provide enrichment opportunities to students regardless of expertise, age, industry involvement or species interests; b) to promote the development of organized animal science activi- ties; c) to encourage the improvement of scholar- ship and develop competent leadership among student members, and; d) to provide services to the animal science industry and the community. Kevin Dedmon, son of Rodney and Myra Dedmon of Shelby, is studying mechanical engi- neering at NC State. Although not an animal science major, Kevin grew up around purebred Shorthorn cattle and has a strong interest in the beef industry. He joined the Animal Science Club in 2010 and recently coordinated the beef show for the organization's annual Club Day, an event where Club members and Animal Science stu- dents demonstrate their livestock showmanship skills. Kevin was named "Most Outstanding New Member" for 2012. Activities Chair: Carrie Hoffner and Kevin Dedmon Luke Martin was named "Most Outstanding Senior Member" for 2012. Luke, son of Dennis and Karen Martin of Fallston, is a senior at NC State University. He is completing a degree in animal science and is slated to graduate from the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. His family owns and operates Martin Charolais Farm, and Luke has always been actively engaged in the beef cattle industry. He holds office in the Animal Science Club, serv- ing as Parliamentarian. Kyle has worked with Kings Mountain farmer Jason Rhodes since age 13, and credits much of his success to the Kings Mountain High School FFA program. Kyle is slated to graduate this year with a degree in Animal Science and a minor in Ag Business Management. He has accepted a position in ani- mal health product marketing and sales with Prima Tech USA. Kyle serves as Club Historian. "Kevin, Luke, and Kyle are all outstanding young men", says advisor Dale Miller, "and they were instrumental to the Club's success during 2011". The Club raises funds to support its community service projects and activities during the 11-day run of the NC State Fair. Members sponsor a milking booth, operate the NC Cattlemen's Association Steak Booth, provide assistance during junior live- stock shows, and organize the State Fair Ark, which showcases North Carolina's diverse livestock indus- try with more than 60 animals on display. They netted more than $36,000 and made $36,625 in donations last year. Animal Science Club benefac- tors include the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. Kyle Richards, son of Ed and Mary Richards of Kings Mountain, received the 2012 Nancy H. Nichols Award, the Club's most prestigious award. As determined by vote of fellow mem- bers, it is given annually to a student who has President-Elect Brett McCaskill (left) and Kyle Richards Scholarship Endowment, American Dairy Science Association, NC Disaster Relief Fund, NC Baptist Men Tornado Relief Fund, Relay for Life, Food Bank of Eastern NC, and CORRAL, a non-profit group dedicated to bettering the lives of troubled teens and rescued horses. The Club also awarded $3,000 in student scholarships and made contributions to several NC State University campus groups. Only
