Page 10 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 Exercise is good for people with Parkinson's Disease. It is a hopeful mes- sage for those who sometimes feel there is little control over the progressive, neurologi- cal illness, which affects about one million Americans. "We have knowledge now of what a wonderful medicine it (exercise) is," says Dr. Mark Hirsch of Carolinas Rehabilitation and one of a panel of Parkinson's Disease experts who recently described the benefits of exercise in a video created by the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson's. "It has an effect on the disease course." Exercise should be part of the standard care, says Dr. Terry Ellis of Boston University. It makes people with Parkinson's "stronger, more flexible, more fit. People should be going to a therapist to get a prescription for exercise." "We see the benefits of exercise every day at Life Enrichment," says Toni Camp, Health Care Coordinator for Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Health Service, which is observing April as Parkinson's Awareness Month. "Exercise gives them some control over their lives," Camp says. "Our participants with Parkinson's are oftentimes discouraged or depressed by the fact that the disease is progressive and has no cure. When they understand that there is something they can do to slow the progression and maintain strength and balance, they are encouraged. "Staff members lead exercise programs every day, but those with special needs, such as those with Parkinson's, are led through therapy plans in the therapy rooms at the two Life Enrichment facilities. Another advantage, Camp says, is the socializa- tion that acts as an encouragement at Life Enrichment. "Most people are reluctant to do the exercises prescribed by the thera- pist at home, but when they're here at Life Enrichment, they exercise together. They laugh and spur each other on. There is definitely a social factor involved. Another advantage to both exercise and socializa- tion is the stimulating effect they have on the brain." "It can improve the quality of life," Dr. Lee Dibble of the University of Utah says on the video, "and reduce disability." Most people, he says, would willingly take a pill, if prescribed, that would put them in a better mood, make their hearts healthier and make their brains healthier. Dibble believes exer- cise should be prescribed. Contrary to what usually happens when people are advised MOVING SALE! THURS, FRI & SAT May 10-26.
