They also had big bass of the day with a 2.30 largemouth. John Black and Roger McNeilly had 7.70 and took second, with Ken Johnson and Fred Wright getting third with 6.60. This week, Lake Wylie starts at 7am with a 1 pm weigh-in. Wylie Thursday night on Lake Wylie, Nathan Williams and Jon Eisenhour brought in 14.69 and got the win, edging out Rob and Matt Johnson who had 14.46. Josh Featherstone and Bobby Spivey got third with 13.93, followed by Todd Garner and Newie Kaperseuth with 13.71. Rounding out the top five was Phillip Burke with 13.26. Big bass of the evening was a 4.57 largemouth brought in by Josh Warren and Mark Humphries. Moss Thursday night on Moss Lake, 32 boats came out, the most all year. Richard McAbee won with 11.18, followed by Ronnie Beason with 10.25. Bryan Thrift and Matt Arey took third with 10.12. Robin Sain and Nate Begley had 7.88 and landed in fourth, while Glenn Eaves and Jeff Melton brought in 7.58 to get fifth. Big bass was a 5.71 brought in by Ronnie Beason. PPG The PPG bass club fished Lake Norman last with Ronnie Black and Roger Marshall getting the win with a catch of 8.9. Evan Edwards and John Brown took second with 8.3 and third went to Richard Young and John Littlejohn with 6.7. Big bass was a 5.0 large- mouth brought in by Black and Marshall. There's just a few more days left. It has been a really weird season. It seems the action started earlier this year per- haps because of the warmer than nor- mal temperatures. Even before opening day the toms were strutting, gobbling, and running to the hens. Hunters had to trade their shotguns for binoculars. After opening day the action began as nor- mal, but then a cold spell hit. After that it was as if their mouths were frozen shut – a few gobbles on the roost and then it seemed they moved throughout the day in silence. Just yesterday I watched a long-beard remain totally unaffected by my calling, even though he was without hens. I know, I know, that may say some- thing about my ability to call, but it's not like they ran off. They just remained un- interested. It's funny that when you think you have gotten this hunting thing down, nature throws you a curve ball and re- minds you how little you really know and how much what you do is determined by things you have no control over. That's a mouthful of truth! And it goes for more important things than hunting as well. This presentation takes patience and practice but it will increase your catch rate. Minnows and small jigs work great and use a thin, sensitive bobber to detect delicate strikes. Small crappies are good practice, but if you want to catch slabs, get away from the little guys because the big ones aren't likely to be among them. Most crappie anglers think they'll find the big slabs in deep water but more often than not, you'll find them in shallow water. Crappie are special prizes because they are abundant and always ready for a tussle. It doesn't hurt that, when rolled in cornmeal and deep fried, crappies are also delicious.
