The AWC Sustainability Council is spon- soring Green Screenings (an eco-friendly film series) on main campus and has now made the first film in the series "No Impact Man" available to the Quartzsite campus. A local screening of "No Impact Man" will be held at the AWC Quartzsite Learning Center on Wednesday, February 22nd from 6-7:30PM. This film is about a Manhattan-based family who abandons their high-consump- tion 5th Avenue lifestyle to try to live a year while making no net environmen- tal impact. David Edelstein of New York Magazine referred to the film as, "An en- tertaining, amusing, and provocative film." Andrew O'Hehir of Salon.com suggested it was hilarious and riveting. This is a free B.Y.O.P. (bring your own popcorn) event that will be held in the multi-purpose room at the Quartzsite Learning Center, 695 N. Kofa Ave. The AWC Quartzsite Learning Center is also sponsoring a Student Art Exhibit on Thursday, March 1st. Stop by and en- joy some of the art produced by students that have been taking painting and draw- ing classes this winter season. Browse at What has your Council done for you? 1. Stopped the need to borrow from the HURF fund to subsidize paying for water and sewer. 2. Treat everyone fairly and squarely. 3. Created a stable government, thus making Quartzsite eligible to apply for and receive Grants. 4. Kept the vendor fees at only $50 for 180 days plus a 30 day extension for an additional $15. 5. Directed staff to continue talks with BLM to open land for sale to the public. 6. Created the Vendor/Swap Meets & RV Parks Municipal Board which has proven very successful in opening a line of communication between the Town, vendors and the County Health Department to be able to better serve the needs of all. 7. Support other boards: Parks and Recreation, Planning and Zoning, Municipal Utility Administrative Committee, Health and Development, Library, Hi Jolly Cemetery, Quartzsite Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and the AZ Centennial Committee, which consist of volunteers from the community. The Council listens very closely to their recommendations and suggestions; this is just one way that the Council reaches out to the public. We hear the way the community wants the Town to go. 8. Continually lend support to businesses wanting to open up in Quartzsite, thus creating jobs. 9. Work very closely with WACOG to secure services for the low income and elderly. 10. The paved roads we all enjoy. 11. The walking paths for enjoyment and safety. 12. The new Gateway signage. 13. Street lights. The list goes on and on. New A.S.K program for kids Hello Quartzsite. We are asking for your assistance and support. First though, an introduction and a bit about us. Scott and I (Nancy) were seasonal visitors to Quartz- site. We owned the Desert Rat Cafe, if you happened to remember it. Well, surprise, here we are in our forties with a baby on the way. We made the decision to stop traveling and stay in Quartzsite. That was three years ago. We sold the kitchen and Scott found a job. I stayed home to raise our daughter, Madison, and be home with her brother, Eli, when he is with us. One of our biggest frustrations raising our daughter here in Quartzsite has been how few enrichment programs there are for kids, especially the little ones. Don't get us wrong, the Parks and Recreation Depart- ment does a great job, we have attended as many events as we can. Growing up, I had so many options. At different time I joined dance, music, arts, sports, even a babysit- ting class. My parents believe that explor- ing your interests helps keep a person well rounded, healthy, happy and encourages learning. I guess we do grow up to be our parents after all. I think it is vitally impor- tant for our kids to get out and do things. So, the time has come to put up or shut up. Scott and I have stepped up to take on the monumental task of bringing more oppor- tunities to the kids of Quartzsite. The ques- tion is, how do we make this happen? Guess what, you are the answer! I know there must be adults out there with skills and tal- ents that can be shared with our youth. We are forming A.S.K., (Adults Sharing with Kids), a not-for-profit corporation. February 15, 2012 Our mission is, "Expanding the enrich- ment opportunities for local kids by utiliz- ing the skills and talents of our adults thru a variety of programs." We will create fo- rums in which to bring adults and kids to- gether that share a common interest. Scott is leading our fundraising efforts. We are still in the process of forming the company. During this time, Quartzsite First Assem- bly of God Church has generously agreed to hold the funds we raise. The first big program we are planning is soccer. We have made arrangements with Blythe Parks and Rec to be an extension of their existing soccer league starting next winter. Quartzsite kids will practice here in town and only go to Blythe on Saturdays for games. We have also been working on providing transportation for those who need it. We want all kids to have the op- portunity to play, so the kids will have a big part of our fundraising efforts. Please be generous with yourself and your money. If you have a skill you'd like to share, please let me know. If you see us out and about, stop and say hello and give a few dollars. We are currently sell- ing 50/50 raffle tickets. The drawing will be held Sunday, March 11th, 3 pm at the conclusion of our yard sale (need not be present to win). We need sellable items. They can be dropped off anytime at Desert Oasis RV Park, 709 W. Main St. (the mo- bile home). If you need help with heavy or large items, please call and we will arrange to have them picked up. Remember, you are the ANSWER! If you can help, our current needs are cor- poration formation, tax professional, finan- cial, insurance, grant writing, fundraising, general volunteering, soccer coaches, skill sharing, yard sale items and assistance.
