Kuehn #22 Next to Bad Boys Cafe 208-431-0111 by Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear long celebration of the Arizona Centen- nial all those years ago, little did they know how politically charged Quartzsite would become. When they realized the scope of the celebrations, they asked the Town of Quartzsite to activate the Centennial volunteer board. That's when five women stepped up to take on the task of celebrating Arizona's 100th Birthday. As Chairperson, I'd like to thank the members of the team; Michelle Lukkasson, Vice-Chair and Fundraiser Extraordinaire, Monica Timberlake, Events Coordinator, Mary Huntley, Education Coordinator, and Audrey Burger, Lasting Legacy Coor- dinator for their hard work over the years. Volunteers from many organizations came forward with ideas, time and labor. When the State of Arizona visited our region in 2010, they were shocked to see what "little Quartzsite" had planned. In the Arizona Tourist News quarterly paper, Quartzsite events dominated the listings for the year. In the January issue, Mesa edged us out of the top listing, but hey, they're a bit larger in population than us...But not in spirit! The community of Quartzsite can be proud of what we ALL accomplished... to- gether! There's always a few who condemn those they disagree with who are working to make a better community, BUT... the DEADLINE is WED. Volunteers really make a community com- plete, with their hours of efforts. I, person- ally, am so very grateful to call Quartzsite my home, knowing how many volunteers choose, daily, to give of themselves in this way. Of course, not everything we planned turned out as planned, however.... Do you know how to make God laugh? Make a plan! The rewards of volunteering are endless. Ask anyone who gives of themselves to their community and they'll likely say it's rather addicting. The joys that come from sharing your gifts with others are not only be felt inside, but radiate outward. There is nothing that bolsters you as much as doing work—paid or unpaid— that is in alignment with your values, and which adds greater meaning to your life. I really never knew how many volunteers were active in this community. Volunteers tend to do their work quietly, many behind the scenes. They usually don't have the time to complain about something they see that needs fixed. They just roll up their sleeves, get in there and do it. "A civilization flourishes when people plant trees under which they will never sit." - Greek Proverb The Arizona Centennial is not done yet, as we get to work out the details for the Lasting Legacy Project. I will cherish my time serving as Chairperson of this board, learning more about our community, mak- ing new friends, and being uplifted by the spirit of Quartzsite. It's been an incredible journey!
