Page 4 Jay and Dottie update Hi, I was sister-in-law to Jay and Dot El- der. I am married to Clarence Jay Elders' brother, Neil and we live in Tampa Bay Florida. I just want to say that I really appreciated the piece written about the work Jay did for the Jams he started in Quartzside, AZ. Jay was always a good person who cared for peo- ple and his music. He spent 20 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, RCAF and retired as a corporal. He and Dot brought up four children. Evie, Shirley, Clarence Jr. and Peter (deceased.) We spent a lot of time with Jay and Dot and the children in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cana- da, while Jay was in the armed forces. That was in the early 70's. Dorothy was not in the Canadian Forces but stayed home with the children while Jay was employed with the Motor Pool in the Halifax, NS base. He was sent to Alberta some time later and we stayed in Halifax, NS as Neil was also in the Canadian Forces as a Captain at Shearwater. We miss Jay and Dot very much but not as much as their children, Evie, Shirley and Clarence Jr. do. Just wanted to fill in the missing pieces of your dialogue in the newspaper. Edony Elder Great folks in town Our little Town is bustling and growing every day. There are lines, and traffic, and all kinds of folks. Our Police Dept., Fire Dept., EMTs, the folks in Town Hall…and then there's the Library; where else would they deliver a book to a shut-in?? Everywhere you go, there is someone to help or ask, "do you need help with some- thing? Do you need a volunteer? Call me I'll be there." Where else do you have people that just stick their head in the door and say, "Is ev- erything alright?" There's too many to list here as there is a limit to the length of a letter. But I want to stand up and say THANK YOU TO ALL THE GREAT FOLKS IN THIS TOWN. Carol Kelley, Quartzsite State of confusion I may be the victim of misinformation and, in turn, was overly zealous in citing the Quartzsite Police Department of stalk- ing customers leaving our local taverns. I therefore stand down from my accusa- tions. However, when I read my state- ment before the Quartzsite Town Council, I received a standing ovation by over one hundred people at that meeting. It became obvious to me at this point that the town is behind the police department should they initiate said policy. I've been in a state of confusion having lived in this town for forty years. The author chose the title of his letter.] Appreciation for Ms. Taft Eleven years ago my homeschooling family migrated to Quartzsite, Arizona where the local library became our daily fare. I was immediately impressed by the librarians and their ability to accommo- date such large numbers of patrons in the busy winter months. This is where I first met Alexandra Taft. Despite the deluge of diverse people in- cluding my "hippie" family, Ms. Taft main- tained an atmosphere of tolerance and re- spect. We invite you to not only see a problem, but December 7, 2011 I particularly recall a time when the be- havior of Ms. Taft revealed her gentle na- ture...our family dog, Fifi was still in the chewing phase of her youth and had man- aged to get her teeth on the corner of our library's latest copy of THE PROPHET, by Kahlil Gibran. When I returned the book, Ms. Taft softly touched the damaged cor- ner with sadness in her eyes. Her compas- sion led me to find a replacement copy at the local bookstore. First as a servant to our library, and now as the manager of our town I have wit- nessed Alexandra Taft endure situations while maintaining her dignity. She has successfully shifted her focus from serving library patrons to establishing beautifica- tion projects throughout our town. Ms. Taft has a strong handle on the mean- ing behind Black Elk's words... "In every deliberation, consider it's impact on the seventh generation." As our AZ Centennial Celebration ap- proaches, I am confident that the decisions made by Town Manager Alexandra Taft will ripple into the future making Quartzsite, Arizona an even better place in the genera- tions to come. He was diagnosed in Septem- ber with stage 2 cancer of the Larynx (voice box). He started radiation and chemothera- py in October. He had to have radiation ev- ery day and chemotherapy once a week for seven weeks. He's completed his treatment, but it will be another three months before he has the scan that will tell us that it worked.
