At home I didn't wait, I cut up the melon for Charles, Mr. Mott, Richard and I. Mr. Mott didn't ask where the melon came from and for some darn reason I didn't volun- teer to tell him about the Japanese fel- low named Ray. Mr. Mott was proper about everything and I wasn't sure if getting a melon from someone behind a fence would be considered proper. I pestered Charles about going to check on the Poston Bee Yard. When we did go Ray wasn't by his garden when we came in, but he was at the fence waving when we came out. Ray was glad we weren't moving the bees and suggested that when we did, if we left a couple of hives behind there were other plants blooming plus all the crops in the gardens behind the fence. Charles wasn't sure it would be okay but Ray said it was. Ray said if I had fabric and thread December 7, 2011 FULL SERVICE SALON See us for all your hair needs! Mr. Mott had given me a box of Miss Ella's sewing things that looked like quilting scraps but folded at the bottom of the box was a large piece of lavender twill with odd white spots. In a bag I set aside the odd-dotted fabric along with a pattern mother had given me. When we pulled up to the fence Ray sent for his wife. She was a tiny wom- an with a wide-brimmed straw hat. I called her "Mrs." Ray and a faint smile showed on her face. "Mrs." Ray used a piece of string to take my measure- HAM RADIO Amateur Radio Bible Study 147.360 MHZ STARTS NOV. 1ST 8:00 AM Every Day Except Sunday Open to all HAMS and Scanners his wife was an excellent seamstress and he had recently bartered for an old treadle machine. At four months I was beginning to show and a mater- nity dress would be nice. Charles wanted to know where I was ments that she didn't write down. I handed her the pattern envelope which she carefully examined then handed it back. She peeked at my fabric in the bag and looked up at me with a slightly amused smile and asked if one week would be acceptable. A couple of weeks went by before we got back up to the Poston Bee Yard. I don't know why, but I had dreaded picking up the dress. But when "Mrs." Ray carefully unfolded the lavender spotted dress and held it up for my approval, I was speechless. I mean really speechless! It was exactly like the dress on the pattern envelope, but more beautiful. I almost danced with joy and not because I hadn't had a new dress in awhile, but because it was truly wonderful. "Mrs." Ray had made a self-fabric belt with extra inch- es of hand-stitched notches for when my waistline grew. She had thought of everything. As my tummy got big- ger, I just moved it to the next notch. After Patty was born I just reversed the notches in the belt and continued to wear my Miss Ella lavender spotted dress until it literally came apart at the seams. her name, made me one more dress before the War Relocation Authority closed the Poston Relocation Camp on September 29, 1945 and the Japanese- American families went back to wher- ever they came from. I often wondered about Ray and "Mrs." Ray. I didn't even know where they were from. The second dress was a pretty black crepe with a little flounce from the shoulder to the hem. I liked it, but I didn't wear it out. It still hangs in my closet. "Mrs." Ray, she never did tell me Family-Owned & Operated Sinced 1958 RV SUPPLIES TO YOU AT WHOLESALE PRICES
