In small towns every- Editorial Just Rambling... Grand Kids, Great Grand Kids, assorted relatives, along with friends and acquaintances makes for a wonderful Thanksgiving. Lots of delicious food and after resting, apple and pumpkin pie with real whipped cream. What a mountain of plates, bowls, pots and pans to clean. After days of Sponge Bob Square Pants, it's great to have our TV back. Provided by Elmer London & Desert Messenger Call me an idealist. Call me optimistic. That works for me! I'm also an avid fan of "Consumer Digest" and the world wide web of information out there. I use Google to find out features of a computer I may be interested in purchasing. Last year, I pur- chased a television on Cyber Monday for a great deal, but searched feverishly for de- tails and sales. This Thanksgiving, I went to see my first 3-D movie "Happy Feet Two"! After the movie I went to Wal-Mart for a few items. It was 5 hours before the big midnight sale began, but already shoppers were ey- ing their route for the "best" deals. It was a strange experience walking around the store with employees "guarding" the "best" computers on sale. Maps were provided highlighting the hot ticket items. That was the closest I ever want to be in the mad dash of Black Friday deals. I enjoyed Shop- ping on Small Saturday at local businesses with more ease and simplicity. where around the globe, folks enjoy the quality and variety of local busi- nesses. by Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear Quartzsite is a totally unique town and seems to have two personalites. The summer personality is that of a quiet rural community, where everyone knows their neighbors. As fall ap- proaches, the personality changes to a vi- brant, somewhat fast paced city, as vendors fill the needs of shoppers, being in town for six months or less. Some vendors return, while others get caught in the snowstorms, have family emergencies, or break down on their way south. Vendor permits in Quartz- site average about 3,000 each year. Perma- nent business licenses are almost 400 this year. That's a lot of businesses for a such a small community of 3,677 permanent residents…….. Our society is geared for winning, such as the recent parade winners, the Acad- emy Awards, the Star of Fame walk, the Independent Film Festival winners, Ari- zona Highways "Best of Arizona". Students strive to be on the Honor Roll and Princi- ple lists (see Page 33). Even folks enjoyed chasing a turkey (see Page 23). Coach Louise writes about Discovering What you Want on Page 19. Winning is almost hardwired for most of us. We love our football, baseball, basket- ball and other team sports. We teach our youngsters that it's important not if you win, but how you play the game. But we all like to win. Especially those who went shopping on Black Friday! It's sad that we've become such a materialistic society; that we think the things are what makes us happy. "Happy Feet 2" has some teachable mo- ments, sharing the message of how team- work can benefit the whole and the value of self worth. The little penguins experi- ence the magic of working together for the greater good. When this happens, every- one wins! Being the best of who we are is what win- ning is all about. Whether we win at our lo- cal Gin Rummy game, desert golf, or a fun readership survey, it's all good! It's the Game of Life that truly matters ... it really is all about how we play the game!
