46 www.DesertMessenger.com Rainbow Acres Golf Tournament #4 Submitted by Linda Taylor Each week it seems we see more old friends returning to the golf scene in our winter oasis of Quartzsite! After Christmas, many of our golfing buddies headed out to enjoy the 4th tournament held at Rainbow Acres on Jan. 2nd. The team of Kit Wilkins and Jerry Taylor led the way with a team score of 38. Second place was won by Bud Key and Chester Henry who fired a 40. There was a tie for 3rd place with 41's by the teams of Russell Leininger & Pete Lilly and Gary McGowan & Larry Krohling. Three teams fired 42's to share 5th place. Those teams were Dino Linden & Linda Taylor, Dennis Dole & Robert Barnard, and Bill Toner & Gene Howard. In closest to the pin competition, Russell Leininger won for men and Linda Taylor won for women. Both scored holes-in-one to earn the honors. Longest drive for men for the day was Russell Leininger. There were a number of holes-in-one for the day. Pete Lilly had an ace on #1, Lee Christner on #12, Russell Leininger on #8 & #10, Dino Linden on #4, and Linda Taylor on #9. We look forward to more friendly competition for our next tournament on Jan. 16 at Rainbow Acres. Quartzsite Golf Course #1 Tournament Submitted by Linda Taylor The most recent tournament played Jan.4, had the largest turnout ever, according to Dino Linden, tournament director. There were 30 avid golfers in attendance to compete. In the 2 person scramble, on a perfect day for golf, the scores were awesome. Over one third of the field, shot under 40 which is considered an excellent score. Winners for the day were Kirk Peterson and Jerry Taylor who fired a team score of 35. Placing 2nd with a score of 36, was the team of Kit Wilkins and Gary McGowan. Third best score was shot by Gene Swallow and Rick Brastrup who shot 37. Tournaments continue every Saturday at 10:00 on the city courses. Entrance fee is $4 per person. All adults are welcome to join in and are encouraged to come make some new friends. SAMPSON FROM PAGE 3 The operator/instructors are bull riders themselves. They will show you how the bull works, how he moves, and how to stay on. When they operate the bull, they'll watch how you ride and can actually help you stay on by controlling the direction and speed the bull moves. Samson is very versatile. He can make you think he's a docile old cow that plugs around the pasture, or a full-fledged rodeo bucking bull that will chew you up and spit you out! Speaking of getting spit out, when you fall off of Samson — and you WILL fall off! — you'll fall onto an air-filled mattress that extends more than 9 feet in each direction. It's kind of like the kids' air-powered funhouse floors. A bounce or two and you're good to go again. Cost is only $5.
