January 15, 2014 letters to the editor Opinions expressed in letters to the editor do not necessarily represent those of the Desert Messenger. FAIR & EQUITABLE SEWER? A lot of talk about the sewer rates. Fair and Equitable (F&E) would be everyone pays the same. The RV parks are upset to have to pay for the sewer. If the RV Park charges just $1.00 per night per lot, then entire yearly sewer charges are paid in four months. That means the RV Park is only renting units for 25% of the time and still covering the entire yearly bill. Private lot owners NOW must pay 50% more then RV lots. Where is the F&E? RV Parks threaten to 'capping' the lines and reducing the number of lots on sewer to lower their rates. The Town must remove the dedicated capacity for these parks and in the future when they want to go back fully on the sewer they should be charged an large hook up fee, IF the existing plant can handle the additional sewer amount. But wait, if the RV park can 'cap' their connections, then can the private lot owners who are not using the service 'cap' theirs? Why must private www.DesertMessenger.com owners, with or without an outlet pay sewer fees and the RV parks not pay. Again F&E does not exist. A small monthly fee for EVERY lot (private or RV Park) is reasonable. Perhaps $5.00 per month as a fixed fee. Then add additional based not the water usage as you do today. Perhaps the 'usage' fee may need to be adjusted, but keep the monthly fixed fee low and affordable. Remember the 'Winter Visitors' and allow them to buy lots/homes here and still be able to pay the charges during the summer when they are gone. Or keep the charges high for the private lot owners and just encourage everyone to rent from the RV Parks. Can you build a town with just renters? The Council must make a decision. Have a F&E sewer rate for all that encourages growth. Or give special treatment to the business and discourage private ownership. There is a saving here as the last choice will prompt families to leave and the schools can be shut down to save money. Skip Gallup Quartzsite St. and Kofa Rd. If you haven't seen them yet they are on Main St. facing East and West and on Kofa Rd. So next time you're out and about take a look at them. Our kids are super proud to be Scorpions!
