Picnic pavilions, ball fields and more make Arnette Park a popular gath- ering spot for families and large groups. The mile-long perimeter road is ideal for biking and walking. There are plenty of picnic areas with grills, and larger sheltered picnic areas can be reserved by contact- ing the park office. There are also several playground areas for children to enjoy, along with horseshoes and tennis and volleyball courts for a full day of family fun. Each December, Christmas in the Park features a must-see celebration of holiday lights and music. Organized youth baseball, football and soccer games are regularly held here, too. The concession stand is open during peak times. An 18-basket disc golf course is also on-site. The park is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during summer hours. Winter hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Best Place for Taking a Hike/Best Place for Doggie Walk Cape Fear River Trail 631 Treetop Drive 910-433-1547 www.fcpr.us/parks-trails/trails/cape-fear-river-trail The Cape Fear River Trail is a perpetual favorite and long- time winner of these Best of Fayetteville titles. No matter what brings you to the trail — exercise, relaxation, communing with nature, a brisk walk with your human or canine friends — you will be glad you came. The trail features over 5 miles of 10-foot-wide paved one-way trails through an amazing array of trees, plants and wildlife. Walkers, runners and bikers love the spec- tacular views of the Cape Fear River. The terrain ranges from flat to slightly hilly. Signs along the trail explain the wildlife and plant life. In addition to the wooden bridges, including one covered bridge, there are more than 1,000 feet of boardwalk through the marsh and wetlands along the trail. Just under 3 miles of the Cape Fear Mountain Bike Trail is now accessible off of the Cape Fear River Trail. It consists of two sections on opposite sides of the trail. Parking is available at both ends of the trail: the southern terminus at J. Bayard Clark Park Nature Center, 631 Sherman Drive, and the northern terminus at Jordan Soccer Complex, 445 Treetop Drive. Amenities include rest rooms at both ends of the trail, portable toilets along the trail, and benches, tables and security call boxes. The trail is open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to dusk. 4411 Ramsey St Suite 106, Fayetteville, NC 28311 (910) 491-4585 Spring Lake 1125 N.
