T22 WHATS UP! September 4 - 10, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert We now know that an inside in- former told the FBI what docu- ments the former president was hiding and where. ... We've also learned that the raid was delib- erately timed to occur when [Trump] was away. So, they had to either wait until he was out of town or for the return of the McRib. As Jon [Stewart]'s friend, I know how uncomfortable he is getting praised. But also, as Jon's friend, I truly enjoy how uncomfortable he is getting praised. ... Now, if Jon were here [to discuss his honor from the president re- garding veterans], he'd say that this isn't about him, that the real heroes are the men and women who've served their country and he is absolutely right. But also, he's not here, so: Congratula- tions, Jon! The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon I'm starting to think Trump's not really a billionaire, because if he were, he'd have blasted off to space by now, don't you think? News of the FBI search [at Mar- a-Lago] not only set off a politi- cal fire storm but also enraged Trump's base. Although, to put it in context, the green M&M not being sexy enough anymore also enraged his base. Ferrari is recalling nearly every car it has sold since 2005 over possible brake failure. ... Thou- sands of men were like, "Phew, that was close. My mid-life cri- sis was almost an end-of-life cri- sis." Get this: After seven years, Domino's Pizza has permanent- ly closed all of its locations in It- aly. Seriously, I'd expect a Domi- no's in Italy to be out of business in 30 minutes or less! I read that the White House has sanctioned a woman who is be- lieved to be Vladimir Putin's girlfriend. It's weird when your girlfriend breaks up with you and says, "It's not you, it's the in- ternational sanctions." Tinder just announced that their CEO is stepping down. She's been there less than a year but, ironically, is still the longest lasting relationship on Tinder. Jimmy Kimmel Live! with David Alan Grier In other mating news, they've got a freaky problem down there in Florida right now. ... Folks have been messing with the manatees down in Florida while they're having group sex. So much so that the Sarasota Police Department had to tweet this warning: "If you see a manatee mating herd, observe respectful- ly from a distance. Do not touch." And I get that. I hate when I'm having sex in public and people try to touch me. Now have you guys heard about the controversy over at the Sesa- me Street theme park in Philly? Well, they got in trouble because some of their costumed charac- ters were accused of ignoring Black kids in the park. ... The theme park is being sued for $25 million by the kids' parents. Their lawyer said the lawsuit was brought to them by the let- ters F and U. Late Night With Seth Meyers President Biden spoke on Mon- day [Aug. 1] from his coronavi- rus quarantine to announce that the U.S. had killed al-Qaida lead- er Ayman al-Zawahiri, which kind of sets unreasonable expec- tations about how much work we're supposed to get done while having COVID. First lady Dr. Jill Biden said in a new interview that she has din- ner with President Biden most nights and they turn off the tele- vision to spend time together. Also, nothing good is on at 4 p.m. According to the latest numbers, after Taco Bell brought back the Mexican Pizza to its menu in May, demand was seven times higher than when the item was previously available. Also seven times higher? The people order- ing them. New York's MTA announced plans last week to provide cell- phone service while traveling between stations. No word on whether they also plan to offer train service. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media By the book: In the three years since Apple TV+ debuted — and the two since "Ted Lasso" became its first breakout hit — the streaming service has been steadily growing its stable of original scripted programming. Just recently, it gave a series or- der to a new six-episode drame- dy starring and executive pro- duced by Eva Longoria ("Des- perate Housewives"). Inspired by Sandra Barneda's bestselling novel, "Land of Women" is the story of Gala (Longoria), a New York empty- nester whose life is upended when her husband implicates the family in financial impropri- eties. Suddenly, Gala is forced to flee her home with her aging mother, Julia (Carmen Maura, "Volver," 2006), and college-age daughter. Apple describes the series as follows: "To escape the danger- ous criminals to whom Gala's now vanished husband is in- debted, the three women hide in the same charming wine town in northern Spain that Gala's moth- er fled 50 years ago, vowing nev- er to return. The women seek to start anew and hope their identi- ties will remain unknown, but gossip in the small town quickly spreads, unraveling their deep- est family secrets and truths." Filming will take place in Spain, where the six episodes will be shot in both English and Spanish, allowing viewers to watch the story unfold in either language. Carlos Sedes ("Now and Then") will direct the series, which was created and written by "Velvet" and "Gran Hotel" collaborators Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira. Series lead Longoria will also serve as executive producer via her UnbeliEVAble Entertain- ment production company, which has been involved with HBO Max's summer streaming hit "Gordita Chronicles," NBC's "Telenovela" and ABC's "Grand Hotel," among others. Taking flight: Fresh off her second Emmy nomination for "The Flight Attendant," star Kal- ey Cuoco recently boarded a new Peacock series. Cuoco will play the lead in "Based on a True Story." De- scribed as a dark comedic thrill- er, the series hails from Craig Rosenberg ("The Boys"), who will serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer along- side Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), among many others. In the series, Cuoco will play the role of a married woman named Ava Bartlett, but that's all we really know about her char- acter so far. The series is said to be inspired by a bizarre true event and involves "a realtor, a plumber and a former tennis star whose lives unexpectedly collide, exposing America's ob- session with true crime, murder and the slow-close toilet seat." When Deadline first reported Cuoco's involvement (and spec- ulated that Ava was the "realtor" from the series description), fans of "The Flight Attendant" worried that the HBO Max se- ries may not return for a third season. Cuoco's reaction to her character's two-season story arc in a May interview with People didn't help matters. "I think for me, at this mo- ment," the actress stated, "the plane has landed." It should be noted, however, that Cuoco hasn't ruled out re- turning to the role if creator/ exec producer Steve Yockey finds the right premise to keep the story going. Hamming it up: Remember that Apple TV+ ad in which Jon Hamm (humorously) com- plained about the streamer fea- turing everyone but him? The aptly titled "Everyone But Jon Hamm" commercial included a shot of the former "Mad Men" star watching "The Morning Show" and commenting, "Jen[nifer Aniston] and Reese [Witherspoon] … no Jon. Feels like a missed opportunity!" Well, it all worked out well for Hamm. Already the winner of an Emmy and two Golden Globes, Hamm picked up another Emmy nomination (his 16th) for that TV spot. Apparently, Apple TV+ also agreed with him about the "missed opportunity" part, be- cause the "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022) actor has officially been brought into the Apple fold. Hamm has been added to the cast of "The Morning Show" for its third season, which was scheduled to go into production just a few weeks ago. He will play the role of Paul Marks, described as a corporate titan who "sets his sights on UBA, pulling Billy Crudup's Cory, Jennifer Aniston's Alex and Reese Witherspoon's Brad- ley into his powerful orbit." At an FYC event, Wither- spoon teased Hamm's character, describing him as being "very complex." "He's a media mogul and he gives Billy Crudup a run for his money," Witherspoon added, "which I think is the most fun part, too, because Billy could eat a scene like I've never seen somebody eat a scene and Hamm gets to come in and give him a great foil." While Season 2 ended with a few cliffhangers, including Co- ry's love confession to Bradley, Season 3 will bring a few chang- es behind the camera, too, as Charlotte Stoudt ("Pieces of Her") takes over the role of showrunner from Kerry Ehrin ("Bates Motel"), who has moved to a consulting role.
