T8 WHATS UP! September 4 - 10, 2022 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Pinocchio" (2022) Everyone's favorite wooden puppet takes to the screen once more in Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis's ("Forrest Gump," 1994) new, live-action family film, "Pinocchio," pre- miering Thursday, Sept. 8, on Disney+. Based on Italian author Carlo Collodi's original charac- ters from the 1883 book "The Ad- ventures of Pinocchio," this film is an adaptation of Disney's 1940 animated version of the story. Set in a small village in 19th-cen- tury Italy, "Pinocchio" follows humble wood carver Geppetto (Tom Hanks, "Toy Story," 1995) as he crafts the titular wooden puppet (voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, "Son of a Critch") and makes a wish upon a star, which brings the mario- nette to life. Although Geppetto treats Pinocchio like his own son, the puppet is desperate to become a real boy and have real- life experiences. So, when a blue fairy (Cynthia Erivo, "Genius") appears to Pinocchio and tells him that she'll turn him into a human boy if he can prove him- self brave, truthful and honest, Pinocchio sets out on a thrilling adventure, accompanied by his guide and conscience, Jiminy Cricket (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, "Inception," 2010), to earn the life he so desperately desires. Joining the main cast are Keegan-Michael Key ("Schmiga- doon!") as Honest John, Luke Evans ("Beauty and the Beast," 2017) as The Coachman and Lor- raine Bracco ("The Sopranos") as Sofia the Seagul, while Sheila Atim ("Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," 2022), Lewin Lloyd ("The Aeronauts," 2019), Hannah Flynn ("Hu- mans"), Giuseppe Battiston ("Perfect Strangers, 2016) and relative newcomer Amy Lee Ronaldson ("The Phantom of the Open," 2021) also star. "Cars on the Road" - Season 1 Start your engines and roll out on a new adventure with Dis- ney/Pixar's newest CGI-animat- ed series, "Cars on the Road," premiering Thursday, Sept. 8, on Disney+. In this new addition to the smash-hit Cars franchise, best pals Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson, "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithso- nian," 2009) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy, "Delta Farce," 2007) leave east from Radiator Springs on a cross-country road trip to meet up with Mater's sis- ter. Across the series' first nine episodes, Lightning and Mater encounter new acquaintances, old friends and more than a few thrilling situations. Based on the original characters created by John Lasseter ("Toy Story," 1995) and written by Steve Purcell ("Brave," 2012), "Cars on the Road" is directed by Purcell, Bri- an Fee ("Cars 3," 2017) and Bob- by Podesta ("Soul," 2020). The series is executive produced by Pete Docter ("Toy Story 4," 2019) and produced by Marc Sondheimer ("Lamp Life," 2020). WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Tell Me Lies" - Season 1 Explore the ups and downs of young love in the new Hulu coming-of-age drama "Tell Me Lies," premiering Wednesday, Sept. 7. Based on Carola Lover- ing's 2018 novel of the same name, the series follows Long Is- land, New York, native Lucy Al- bright (Grace Van Patten, "Nine Perfect Strangers") as she heads to a small California college, more than happy to have hun- dreds of miles of space between herself and her mother. Quickly finding a kindred spirit in hand- some, charming and beyond complicated Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White, "Mrs. Fletch- er"), "Tell Me Lies" follows the couple through their tumultu- ous, addictive relationship over the course of eight years as they grapple with college, their post- grad lives in New York City and their own dark pasts. If Lucy and Stephen ever want to learn what it means to truly love, they must face the skeletons in the closet or risk losing themselves to un- healthy delusions forever. Writ- ten for the screen by Meaghan Oppenheimer ("Queen Ameri- ca"), "Tell Me Lies" is directed by Jonathan Levine ("50/50," 2011), Sam Boyd ("Love Life"), Erin Feeley ("Orange Is the New Black") and Ed Lilly ("Indus- try"). The series also stars Tyriq Withers ("The Game"), Jade Fernandez ("Deep Water," 2022), Aidan Alexander ("Play by Play"), Gabriella Pession ("Crossing Lines"), Edmund Donovan ("Betty"), Andrea Pre- vatt ("The Plymouth Period," 2021) and Jacobi Hollingshed ("The Resident"). WHAT'S NEW ON PARAMOUNT+ "The Good Fight" - Season 6 Lawyer Diane Lockhart's (Chris- tine Baranski, "Mamma Mia!," 2008) story reaches its exciting conclusion in the sixth and final season of "The Good Fight," pre- miering its first new episode Thursday, Sept. 8, on Para- mount+. Episodes air weekly on the streamer thereafter. Picking up a year after the final episode of the smash-hit network drama "The Good Wife," this series spi- noff began as a financial scam destroyed the reputation of young lawyer Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie, "Game of Thrones") and wiped out the savings of her mentor and god- mother Diane Lockhart. Forced out of the Lockhart & Lee firm, Maia and Diane join forces with Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo, "The Beast Must Die") at Reddick, Boseman & Kolstad, one of Chi- cago's pre-eminent Black-led law firms. As the pair rebuild their careers from the bottom up, they take on cases spanning modern social issues, including the rise of extremist violence in the U.S., threats to the rule of law and now, as series creators Phil Alden Robinson ("Field of Dreams," 1989), Michelle King and Robert King (both of "The Good Wife) have teased, a po- tential new "civil war" in the sixth season. Sarah Steele ("The Good Wife"), Nyambi Nyambi ("Mike & Molly"), Delroy Lindo ("The Chicago Code"), Michael Boatman ("Instant Mom"), Au- dra McDonald ("The Gilded Age"), Gary Cole ("NCIS"), Zach Grenier ("24) and Brenda Braxton ("Nurse Jackie") round out the series cast.
