MONICA HOOPER NWA Democrat-Gazette M ontell Jordan, pastor, singer, songwriter and record producer best known for his 1995 single "This Is How We Do It," will headline this year's Freedom Festival along with Morris Day and The Time from 1-9 p.m today, June 19, at Shiloh Square on Emma Avenue in Springdale. Other music acts include Mr. Sipp. "He's a blues guitarist out of Mississippi. He won the International Blues Competition several years back," Anthony Ball of Music Moves says. "We also have an award-winning gospel artist, Lamar Campbell. Supporting him will be a group of local gospel singers." JukeBoxx will also play songs for all ages to enjoy during the festival. The festival will also feature Black-owned businesses, bouncy houses for kids, giveaways and special hosts former NBA and Razorback basketball player Ronnie Brewer Jr., local professional boxer Kalvin Henderson and the Rev. Stephen Ivey from St. James Missionary Baptist Church. Crystal Bridges' CB to You Mobile Art Lab will also be there. The downtown festival will be in celebration of Juneteenth, which was recognized as a federal holiday last year. Music Moves aims "to make Black music accessible to students and to our communities through performance and education." Fort Smith Juneteenth Celebration Fort Smith will celebrate Juneteenth starting at 5 p.m. today at Riverfront Park, 121 Riverfront Drive. Comedian Joe Torry will serve as host for the free event featuring the U.S. Army Field Band Jazz Ambassador's Songs of Freedom. The production will celebrate the contributions of individuals during the Civil Rights movement. Jazz artist Rodney Block and Fort Smith native Genine Latrice Perez will also perform.
