June 19 - 25, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 In both films, he played Spud, one of the ensemble of Scottish ne'er-do-wells whose friend- ships and drug addictions form the movies' strangely beautiful hearts. Bremner's a Scot in real life, and his heavy accent is played for laughs in those films, just as it is in "Our Flag Means Death." But he's not just a funny ac- cent for hire. You may, for example, know him from the times he played American soldiers in the decid- edly unfunny "Pearl Harbor" or "Black Hawk Down" (both re- leased in 2001). He also catered to all his strengths at once in the 2004 action-horror "Alien vs. Predator" and 2017's "Wonder Woman," playing a funny Scot- tish soldier in both films. He's also capable of roles in subtle art films, having done a couple of Woody Allen pictures (2010's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" and 2005's "Match Point"). There are plenty of other op- tions as well. While never (yet) a leading man, Bremner has built a top- notch career as a versatile sup- porting star and now has more than 100 film and TV roles on his resume. Q: I just saw a listing for a show called "Mixed-ish." Is that connected to "Black-ish" somehow? A: "Mixed-ish" is directly linked to fellow ABC sitcom "Black-ish" — it is, in fact, a pre- quel. Not only that, but both share a sort of "Ish"-iverse with a third series, "Grown-ish," which aired on ABC's cable sibling, Free- form. All three were created by Ke- nya Barris ("Cheaper by the Dozen," 2022) and based loosely on his own life and that of his wife, Rainbow Edwards-Barris. "Black-ish" premiered in 2014 and centered on husband and wife Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson, "Law & Order") and Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross, "Girlfriends"), Black par- ents trying to maintain their cul- tural identity while raising kids in a predominantly white neigh- borhood. "Grown-ish," the sequel spi- noff released in 2018, follows the Johnsons' daughter Zoey as she heads off to college. (The youth focus made it a natural fit for Freeform instead of ABC.) A year after "Grown-ish" hit Freeform, "Mixed-ish" debuted back on ABC. That one was a prequel that depicted the unusu- al childhood of "Black-ish" ma- triarch Rainbow Johnson after her parents left their hippie commune for the suburbs in the '80s. Alas, "Grown-ish" is the last "Ish" standing. "Mixed-ish" only lasted two seasons, while the flagship, "Black-ish," ended in April after eight seasons on the air. "Grown-ish" returns for a fifth season in July. ABC actually toyed with two more spinoffs — "Old-ish" and "Brown-ish" — but neither has gotten off the ground (so far, at least). Have a question? Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: Does George Clooney do his own singing in "O Brother, Where Art Thou"? A: You have to hand it to George Clooney ("The Monu- ments Men," 2014) — he gave it a shot. But the voice you hear singing in the film and on the smash-hit soundtrack is that of folk singer Dan Tyminski. At an "O Brother, Where Art Thou" cast reunion at the Nash- ville Film Festival in 2020, Cloo- ney recalled that everyone had high hopes for him — filmmak- ers Joel and Ethan Coen, soundtrack producer T Bone Burnett and Clooney himself. "They assumed I could sing because my aunt was [pop and jazz singer] Rosemary Clooney," Clooney said. Unfortunately, reality didn't meet the expectation. Clooney said that the Coens and Burnett took him into a re- cording studio to do the song "Man of Constant Sorrow," a tra- ditional Americana folk tune that, in the film, is a runaway hit for Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson ("Holes," 2003) and John Turtur- ro's ("Severance") fictional band, The Soggy Bottom Boys. The song's wild success drives much of the film's plot. That's a lot of pressure to put on an actor, and Clooney didn't hesitate to admit that he didn't deliver. He said that when he stepped out of the booth after recording his take, no one could even meet his gaze. When he listened to the tape, he understood why: "It lit- erally sounds like a cat caught in the wheel well of a truck driving down the street," he said. "Then they brought in Dan Tyminski and he sang it for me. It was pretty humiliating." Q: Who plays Buttons, the navigator, on "Our Flag Means Death"? He looks so familiar. A: You must have an eye for faces, since, with his bushy beard and long, scraggly hair, Ewen Bremner looks drastically different in the HBO Max come- dy "Our Flag Means Death" than he does in any of his other big roles. Most notably, he was clean- shaven (on his face and most of his head as well) in "Trainspot- ting" (1996) and its very late se- quel, "T2 Trainspotting" (2017).
