4 UCW JANUARY 20-26, 2021 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL Greetings from the Kiwanis President by GEORGE TURNER I don't think anyone will soon forget the year 2020. With so many changes to our daily life, most of us aren't sure what the term "normal" really means anymore. I never thought that I would see a time when churches closed their doors or a business would close because we were in fear of a virus. With all we have endured, and with 2020 in our rear view mirror, Kiwanis is a bright spot for many of us today. A comforting and constant force in a confusing world. As members of the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville, we experienced 2020 as a year of online meetings. Our 2019-20 President Hal Broadfoot kept us together and focused on our core mission. e Kiwanis mission statement is clear. "Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child, and one community at a time." We exist solely to help the children worldwide succeed, grow, and develop in today's climate. is is our mission and our challenge. Our club is 175 members strong and ranks in the top 10 of the nation's largest Kiwanis Clubs. Kiwanis International has also recognized our club for having one of the largest and most extensive Terrific Kids campaigns in the world. Yes, I said WORLD. So, why am I telling you all of this? Because on December 1, 2020, the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville celebrated a very special birthday. One hundred years ago, on December 1, 1920, 75 Fayetteville businessmen got together and chartered our club, three months later, the club had grown to 180 members. Ironically, our country was also amid a pandemic similar to that of today. e Spanish Flu had crippled America and the world. Since that day in 1920, our club has worked tirelessly to serve the needs of this community's children. On a personal note, let me ask you this: Do you know the feeling that you have inside when you have done something good for someone else? Ki- wanis Club members have those wonderful feelings every day. Much of the work we do goes unno- ticed, and that's OK. When you see the children's faces that you helped and hear their stories, that's enough to make anyone proud. Our Kiwanis Clubs maintains over thirty ongoing committees that provide local children vital services, recognition, books, educational materials, Terrific Kids awards, recreational opportunities, and heartfelt guidance into adulthood, and much, much more. Lastly, you are invited to join us. Before Covid, we met every Friday at the Fayetteville Kiwanis Recreation Center on Devers St at 1:00 p.m. Great food, fun and fellowship. Soon, we will meet there again. Today, our meetings are online by Zoom. We would love to have you join us as a visitor. Go to our website www.FayKiwanis.us, or our Facebook page for more information. Feel free to contact me personally at 910-221-4095. In the meantime, enjoy this special edition of Up & Coming Weekly celebrating our 100th An- niversary serving the Fayetteville and Cumberland County community. It's a concise recollection of Fayetteville Kiwanis history and a beautiful and honorable tribute to the men, women, businesses, and organizations that have helped us build and maintain one of Fayetteville and Cumberland County's most impactful and significant organizations. Now, we are on to the next one hundred years. Join us and be a part of history. And, always re- member: "KIDS NEED KIWANIS." George Turner 2020-2021 President Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville
