I had just begun my professional life — the ink on my gradu- ate degree was barely dry. I was jumping into the deep end, starting a career at Merrill Lynch. No small task for a twenty-year-old, but I was joining my father and grandfather as a financial advisor. One of the first things they told me when I began my career was that I needed to be involved in the community. Working hard for the people that pay you is important, but so is working for those who can't pay you. So, my grandfather R.T. said, "Come with me to Kiwanis!" I have two Kiwanis memories that prob- ably date back to age 6 or so. One is of an an- nual Christmas program. Most of it is rather hazy, but I do remember hamburgers, treats for the kids, and a Kiwanian dressing up as Santa to hand out gifts and to make jokes. At the time, much of the program went over my head — I couldn't quite work out what Bill Clinton had done to get on the naughty list. Still, the feeling of good people with friendly faces stayed with me for a long time. e other memory is of going with my father to read some books to a preschool class, and give books away to children who needed them. At the time, I was probably only a couple of years older than the other children, but it meant a lot to be included. It also impressed upon me the impact and importance of the Kiwanis mission. So I joined the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville. At first, it was daunting. At twenty, entering a room with gener- als, judges and state senators takes some work. But every Fri- day at one o'clock, I'd sit down at the Ki- wanis Center, and I'd save a seat for Grand- dad. We would eat lunch and enjoy the program, catching up in between. It didn't stop there, though. Friday lunches are always a good time, but the projects are where the work gets done. Once he had talked me in the door, Granddad encour- aged me to join a project or two. "at's where you'll get to know good people and do good work." So, following in my father's footsteps, I joined the Reading is Fun com- mittee, spending time reading and giving books to preschool children. I also helped with the Youth Baseball program, and the annual Talent Night. After a few years, I had the oppor- tunity to serve on the club's Board of Directors. As each year goes by, I realize more and more just how much Kiwanians do in Fayetteville, and I am more grateful for the example of my father and grandfather. ey are the reason I am a proud Kiwanian, and a big part of the reason that I love this community so much. And now I'll tell you the same thing my grandfather told me: "Come with me to Kiwanis!" I know you'll love it as much as I do.
