As a young kid growing up who loved to dance and sing, the Fayetteville Kiwanis Talent Night provided an opportunity every year for me and hundreds of other local children to perform on stage in front of a live audience. And, at the Cape Fear Re- gional eatre! at, in and of itself, was so valuable to someone who knew they wanted to be a performer by age 5. e other thing it provided me was exposure and com- munity. It exposed me to other kids who were just as passionate about what they did as I was. Piano players, violinists, contortionists, other dancers, and some re- ally good singers (my voice was only ever mediocre). But it was the men and women of the Kiwanis Club along with a caring artistic community that gave us one very special night a year to come together and showcase what we could do. And yes, it's technically a competition. But thinking back on it now, it's so much more than that. It's really a showcase of the future and of what's possible when kids are given a supportive artistic platform to nurture, hone, and grow their passion. I will forever be grateful for that and to the Fayetteville Kiwan- is Club. Congratulations on your 100th Anniversary! — Grady McLeod Bowman Actor, choreographer ank you, George Quigley! As a Fayetteville Kiwanian, I get to be a part of making my community a better place! I get to help others, read to a child, or present a bicycle to a child who, in return, gives me an unforgettable smile. I get to make an assertive and positive difference in my community, but more importantly, I get to surround myself with people that I can call life-long friends. Friends like the late George Quigley. George was a long-time dedicated Fayetteville Kiwanian who introduced me to the club years ago. Besides his friendship, introducing me to the Kiwanis Club was perhaps the best gift he could have ever given me. Yes, I am extremely proud to be a member of an organization that dedicates a day each year to our Farm City event recognizing and thanking our Cumberland County farmers for their dedication and hard work. is decade-old salute to local agriculture is a long-standing Kiwanian tradition that honors our farmers and recognizes the importance of their contributions to our community's agricultural industry. — Lisa Childers Cumberland County Extension Director It's no wonder, so many Eagle Scouts become Kiwanians. Both organizations have similar standards, goals, and objectives: •To give priority to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. •To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. •To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards. •To develop by precept and example, more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship. •To provide through Kiwanis Clubs a practical means to form enduring friendships, render altruistic service, and build better communities. •To cooperate to create and maintain sound public opinion and high idealism, which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill. ese principles of Kiwanis embody the principles of the Scout Oath and Law. It becomes almost natural for a young person who has had the experience of Scouting to want to continue a life of service and value. It's a natural migration to becoming a Kiwanian. As an adult Scouting leader (with a grandson on his way to Eagle Scout), I have had the good fortune to have the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club provide service opportunities, project hours, and financial support for the Scout Troop. As young people finish high school and their time in Scouting and then move on to college and adult life, I hope that I have planted the seeds that will sprout into dedicated Kiwanians of the future. — Pat King Scouting Director KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL
