When my husband and I moved to another community across the state after retirement, Kiwanis opened doors quickly to learn about my new community and develop new friendships. I've learned Kiwanians are a life- long benefit no matter a person's age, gender, race or bank account. My initial introduction to the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville was quite a comical experience when I attended a meeting as a guest of the late, great Bill Hurley. I was entertained by the club's traditional and irreverent presentation of "Laws and Regulations." Presented by a quick- witted Kiwanian, it was hilarious and spared few from his cutting remarks. Not a place for someone with thin skin and surely not what I expected from a local civic club. However, it was all re- ceived and enjoyed in good fun. Additional visits to the club meetings proved to provide interesting learn- ing on Fayetteville and the region's various subjects. I quickly realized that the good-natured fun they were having was embed- ded in their DNA. During subsequent meetings, I enjoyed being introduced to club mem- bers of various profes- sions, backgrounds and ages. Both my life-long career, which focuses on improving children's lives, and my instilled belief in the importance of giving back to the community through volunteering are why I became a Fayetteville Kiwanian in the late 90s and proudly served as the club's President in 2014. It is also why I continued to be committed to the Kiwanis mission and invested as an active Kiwanis member in my current hometown of Waynesville. I've found that the key ingredient to the success of Kiwanis Clubs, both locally and internationally, is fun, relationship building through service, and membership engage- ment. I've developed relationships with many people and had experiences from which I've benefitted that I probably wouldn't have if not for Kiwanis. Offering meaningful citizenship building opportunities for children, youth and young adults through services, projects and grants are how Kiwanis accomplishes its mission. ank goodness for Zoom technology, we have been able to remain engaged throughout this crazy pandemic. I'm genuinely grateful for the friendships and experiences I continue to have with Kiwanis and encourage others to explore the fantastic Kiwanis opportunities available to feel connected, be connected and make a difference in your community. Kids Need Kiwanis more now than ever! Congratu- lations to the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville on its 100th Anniversary. I am so proud to be a part of your Kiwanis history.
