Police Chief Search Nets 131 Applicants F CUSOn The City of Fayetteville has received 131 applications in the search for a new police chief. The position closed Oct. 5. Police chief job applications were scheduled to be reviewed in October. The general public attended two meetings in September and spoke with City Manager Ted Voorhees about the qualities they want the next police chief to possess. Voorhees clearly understands the importance of the police chief hiring as he has hired two police chiefs in two cities where he served previously. The Fayetteville City Council also conveyed the position's importance to Voorhees during his job interview. Voorhees has met with Police Department staff three times about the police chief search process and is seeking their input on the leadership qualities they value. The City has hired Developmental Associates to assist in the selection process; they heard from community members in September, as part of an organizational assessment that will guide the process. In order to make the most informed choice possible for the position, the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) has helped the City recruit national membership organization of progressive police executives from the largest city, county, and state law enforcement agencies who collectively serve more than half the country's population. One of PERF's functions is to conduct searches for communities seeking police chief executives. PERF isn't new to Fayetteville. The organization conducted the 2001 police chief search that resulted in the hiring of the late Tom McCarthy. PERF also completed a comprehensive management study for the City in 2010 that led to the development of a continued next page www.cityoffayetteville.org www.facebook.com/cityoffayettevillegovernment Twitter @CityOfFayNC The City took over ownership of the for bankruptcy in February 2000.
