Dozens of parade units: floats, horses, cars, marching bands, kings and queens of every age, shape and size and the unbridled enthusiasm of the crowd made the homecoming parade and celebration at Fayetteville State University enjoyable and extremely entertaining. It was evident that FSU's Bronco pride was in abundance as former students returned to their alma mater. It was also encouraging to see enthusiastic young people marching, laughing, singing, twirling, cheering and waving to the crowd as part of this annual traditional celebration. It was great fun, and even the threatening-overcast skies could not dampen the spirits of the participants. I was also glad to see several local Cumberland County high school bands participating and supporting the event. Needless to say, the magnificent marching machine of E.E. Smith High School stirred up the crowd with its energetic performance in front of the reviewing stand, which was provided by the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Parks and Recreation Department. It was, no doubt, a crowd favorite. The parade, from an organizational and logistical point of view, receives an A+. Entertaining and well organized, it flowed nicely and I'm sure it made FSU Chancellor James Anderson and visiting alumni extremely proud. Good job! The entire event made me think about all the fine colleges and universities we have in our community and of the significant contributions they make to our social, cultural and economic base. Fayetteville Technical Community College, Methodist University, Fayetteville State University and the plethora of colleges that have adjunct campuses on Fort Bragg, all offer up unique ways to fulfill the dreams of Fayetteville's Weather Forecast November 2 Thursday November 1 Saturday November 3 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday residents — young and old alike. This is why I was surprised — and somewhat disappointed — at the absence and lack of participation by our elected officials. It would have been nice to have seen our city and county leaders seated alongside Chancellor Anderson, FSU trustees and their invited guests. I know everyone is busy, but it would have been nice to have had someone representing our local governments. However, to their credit, I was glad to see Lou Olivera present representing our "Hometown Utility" PWC, State Representative Rick Glazier and Cumberland County School Board member Carrie Sutton. If I missed seeing others I apologize but, you get my point. FSU makes many wonderful contributions to our community, and as Fayetteville and Cumberland County continue to grow and prosper, it will continue to play a huge role in our future success and prestige. We need to embrace this institution. FSU deserves our support, respect, presence and participation on all fronts — especially during times like homecoming when our community serves as host to so many visitors returning to pay homage to this wonderful institution. They came from all over the United States to be here for this celebration. One marching band came from as far away as Collingwood, N.J., under the direction of band director and FSU alumni, Curtis Bell. Now that is loyalty! Again, FSU did a great job hosting this event and it refl ected well on our community. Hopefully, we will take full advantage of welcoming these loyal fans back to Fayetteville and the educational institution that affected and directed their lives. Bronco Homecoming 2013. I can't wait.
