ELECTION Guide 2012 As I see it, this is only course of action since the school system has already been cut to the bone and any other cut will negatively affect our students. Perhaps, one of these days, our teachers will get a pay raise so we can stop the exodus of many of our talented overworked and underpaid teachers. If we focus on the children, all the children, partisan politics will never become a problem. In my four years on Cumberland County School Board, I have never known any vote to be along party lines. In fact, I am not really sure which political party each board member is affiliated with. Let's keep the focus on the children. "All the children – All the Time" Violence is always a concern and the school has no greater job than keeping our children safe. There are a number of programs the school can implement to lessen violence in the school and the principal should use every tool available. But in the end, we must make sure every child is safe and not tolerate violence. Those few who insist that violence is the way to solve issues should be moved from the general population and educated in a more structured environment. H.M. "Morrie" Turner School Board, District 6 First, we must reduce administrative costs by reducing positions! Our teachers complain constantly about overcrowded classrooms and excessive statistical paperwork. Much of this excessive paperwork is done to justify the existence of unneeded administrative positions. We need to focus on the role of classroom teachers who are the real educators in our society. Secondly, we must eliminate or greatly reduce out of county travel by school special activity groups including athletics, forensics, musical ensembles and school clubs. Extracurricular activities should be limited to in county competitions except for regional and state championship competitions. Recruit and enlist financial aid by local businesses and civic organizations! Develop vocational advisory boards to help establish, sponsor and finance vocational and technical apprenticeships. Maximize the use of existing classroom space by offering vocational training at night for students who wish to learn skills which lead to gainful employment before and after graduation. Principals must be allowed to enforce existing school rules! In school Retention should be emphasized, but not at the expense of those students who are earnestly seeking an education and are more constantly interrupted by a small percentage of students who are unwilling to behave. Bad behavior is not tolerated in the general public and should not be tolerated in our schools. Employ more school resource officers to patrol our schools. The are a great deterrent to misbehavior and disrespect. compromised by political ambitions. Our students are society's future. We must nurture and instill a sense of responsibility and discipline in each student. Each school board member must be wiling to respect other board members and be unselfish in his of her efforts to help every student excel. The well being of our students should never be Insist that students, teachers and administrators act with complete respect toward each other.
