Light years later, it seems, Mc- Donough, 51, is in Santa Clara interviewing for the job which would in theory pull the person- nel strings to return the 49ers to those glory days. McDonough, the 49ers an- nounced Friday, is interviewing for the G.M. job to replace the fired Trent Baalke. As vice president of player per- sonnel for the Arizona Cardi- nals, McDonough oversees both the college and pro personnel de- partments and assists with con- tract negotiations. "My strength is, I'm a team player, but I'm also very true to how I feel about evaluations, sit- uations," McDonough told Ari- zona reporters upon being hired in 2013. "You're going to get Terry McDonough's opinion. I will tell you how I feel." The McDonough name is a fa- miliar one in sports, as Terry's father was Will McDonough, the late sports writer of the Boston Globe, and brothers are ESPN "Monday Night Football" play- by-play man Sean McDonough and Phoenix Suns general man- ager Ryan McDonough. By Jon Hickey Bay Area News Group OAKLAND The Oakland A's fo- cus may be more internal than external heading into the holiday weekend after getting agreements with Sonny Gray, Liam Hendriks and Stephen Vogt Friday. That leaves only outfielder Khris Davis as a potential sal- ary arbitration case, and the A's would prefer to strike a deal with him before the two sides have to step into a room to face an arbi- trator. He led the club with 42 homers and 102 RBI last year, his first in Oakland. Friday was the deadline for teams and players to settle on a salary figure before exchanging the figures that will be used if a case goes to a hearing. The A's are still exploring op- tions in free agency, but sources suggest the club isn't looking to make a big splash at this point. Specifically, the A's are unlikely to be major players for American League home run champ Mark Trumbo, a first baseman/DH who entered the off-season hoping for a contract similar to the four-year, $52-million deal former A's right fielder Josh Reddick signed with the Astros. Oakland made a big play for another slugger, Edwin Encar- nacion, but he signed with Cleve- land. Nunez reached a $4.2 million, one-year agreement with the Gi- ants on Friday to avoid arbitra- tion. Right-handed reliever George Kontos received a $1.75 million contract and left-hander Will Smith earned $2.5 million as the club announced all of its arbitra- tion-eligible players had reached new deals. The Giants acquired All-Star infielder Nunez, the projected starting third baseman going into 2017, from Minnesota ahead of the trade deadline. But he was side- lined for the final six games of the regular season and was unable to start in the playoffs against the Cubs because of a strained right hamstring.
