Pacific Gas and Elec- tric Co. is installing re- mote sensing devices on power poles to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages in Los Mo- linos. The devices are called SCADA devices, or Super- visory Control and Data Acquisition Devices. The pole-mounted devices con- tinuously monitor voltage and power grid conditions and notify grid operators pre-identify issues and pin- point trouble spots. More than 4,000 homes, farms and businesses in the Los Molinos area will bene- fit from the improved elec- tric reliability. The devices — about the size of a small cabinet — also can be used remotely to operate switches and safely reroute power in the event of an outage. Previously, the switches were operated manually, which often involved travel time for crews and longer restoration times for cus- tomers. The four devices should be installed and operating by the end of January. In 2015, PG&E delivered record electric reliability to its customers for the sev- enth straight year, with the average customer experi- encing less than one outage in the year. Since 2009, the energy company has con- sistently reduced the aver- age duration of power out- ages. RESOURCES Se rv ic es a nd a dv oc ac y gr ou ps f or v et er an s The Bureau of Land Management will host free guided hikes to look for wintering bald eagles in the Berryessa Snow Moun- tain National Monument in Lake County on Saturdays, beginning Jan. 21 and con- tinuing through Feb. 18. Those interested in par- ticipating should reserve space for a specific date by calling the BLM Ukiah Field Office at (707) 468- 4000. Early reservations are requested for the pop- ular hikes, which are lim- ited to 25 participants each and fill quickly. Participants will meet at the Redbud Trailhead park- ing area, eight miles east of Clearlake Oaks on Highway 20 at 10 a.m. The trailhead is just west of the North Fork Cache Creek Bridge (38° 59' 13.20" N, 122° 32' 22.50" W). Hikers are advised that the Redbud trail is in an area that was burned dur- ing the 2015 Rocky Fire. The five-mile hikes last about four hours. The trail includes a steep 600-foot climb in the first mile, so hikers should be in good physical condition and sure-footed. Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots suitable for wet conditions and dress for cold weather. They should carry water, a lunch and binoculars, as most eagle sightings are from a distance. Additional information is available from the Ukiah Field Office, at 2550 North State St., Ukiah. WILDLIFE BL M o ff er in g gu id ed b al d ea gl e hi ke s The Federal Bureau of Investigation Sacramento field office is accepting ap- plications for the Spring 2017 FBI Teen Academy. This opportunity is open to all high school juniors attending any school — public, pri- vate and home school — in the 34-counties the field office serves, includ- ing Tehama County. The application package is available for download at https://www.fbi.gov/ contact-us/field-offices/ sacramento/community- outreach-1. Students selected to participate will spend an entire day at FBI Sacra- mento field office head- quarters in Roseville on Friday, April 7. Applying and attending the FBI Teen Academy program is free; however, families are responsible for travel to and from the class. The FBI Teen Academy is an opportunity for any student — regardless of career interest — who is curious about the FBI, what the FBI investigates, and how it serves the community. Participants engage in activities and discussions about what the FBI does and current topics relative to FBI in- vestigations. Activities may include discussions about cy- ber safety, terrorism, ac- tive shooter situations, and color of law and civil rights investigations; par- ticipation in simulated evidence response team and bomb techs scenar- ios; and frank conversa- tions about online com- munication and staying safe in an always-con- nected world. After completing the class, participants bet- ter understand the FBI's role in their communi- ties, grasp the complex- ity of FBI investigations, can make lifestyle choices to be safer in their day-to- day lives and what FBI ca- reer paths are available. FBI Teen Academy stu- dents often remain con- nected with the field of- fice to facilitate presenta- tions and mentorship. Each spring and fall, the FBI Sacramento field office hosts the FBI Teen Academy for 20-36 stu- dents. More than 250 stu- dents have attended the FBI Teen Academy in Sac- ramento to date. The community is in- vited to attend this free, family-friendly event. The teams will compete against each other using robots created from VEX Robotics components and software for education called VEX EDR. Participants will square off in the VEX Robotics Competition game of Star- struck, which is played by scoring stars and cubes in scoring zones and by hanging their robots on designated hanging bars. The top three teams from this competition will advance to the state com- petition held in San Jose in March, with the chance of competing in the Vex Robotics World Champi- onship in June. This event is a joint venture of Shasta High School and Shasta Col- lege. Shasta College re- ceived a grant, focused on the advanced man- ufacturing sector, from the California Commu- nity College, Doing What Matters initiative, a por- tion of which sponsored $1,000 kits for local high schools to inspire and strengthen their robotics programs. This event is actively recruiting volunteers, no experience needed, just be ready for an action- packed day.
