Ontheair director for the Barce- lona Dragons of the World League (1990-92) and then as scout for the Cleveland Browns under the direc- tion of Ozzie Newsome, where he moved with the team to Baltimore. Mc- Donough was with the Ra- vens when they won the Super Bowl following the 2000 season. Before joining Arizona in 2013 as an eastern re- gional scout, McDonough worked 10 years for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as- cending to the role of di- rector of player personnel in 2009. 49ers owner Jed York and executive vice presi- dent Paraag Marathe can expect a blunt assessment of the 49ers roster. "A lot of times, people, when they work with some- one, might be a little hesi- tant to say how they really feel because they want to go along with the bosses," McDonough said in 2013. "I think that's a natural thing for a lot of human beings, but that's not who I am." Others who have inter- viewed to be 49ers gen- eral manager include Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst of the Green Bay Packers, George Paton of the Min- nesota Vikings, Jimmy Raye III of the Indianapo- lis Colts, Brandon Beane of the Carolina Panthers and ESPN analyst Louis Rid- dick, who has worked in personnel with both Phil- adelphia and Washington. York and Marathe are reportedly headed to Seat- tle after interviewing Mc- Donough. When the Se- ahawks return after play- ing their NFC divisional playoff game in Atlanta, offensive line and assis- tant head coach Tom Ca- ble is scheduled to be in- terviewed for the head coaching job, and person- nel executives Trent Kirch- ner and Scott Fitterer for the G.M. position. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 pete with Nunez for play- ing time. The 29-year-old Nunez batted .288 with 16 hom- ers and 67 RBIs between the Twins and Giants, hit- ting .269 with four hom- ers, 20 RBIs, nine dou- bles and three triples in 50 games for San Francisco. He earned $1,475,000 last season. Kontos, who earned $1.15 million last sea- son, was part of a bull- pen that struggled down the stretch and ultimately cost the Giants in their four-game NL Division Series defeat to the even- tual champion Cubs. San Francisco squandered the game and series in the ninth inning of Game 4 when the bullpen failed to hold a 5-2 lead in the ninth inning, with five re- lievers unable to end it. And the Giants missed out this time in their ev- ery-other-year World Se- ries quest after winning titles in 2010, '12 and '14. Acquired from Milwau- kee at the trade dead- line, Smith went 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 26 appear- ances and 18 1/3 innings for the Giants. He earned $1,475,000 in 2016. Giants FROM PAGE 1 able that he will wind up in Oakland. The A's have two free agents almost ready to announce, word hav- ing leaked this week that third baseman Trevor Plouffe and reliever San- tiago Casilla have reached terms with the club. Pa- perwork issues and medi- cal exams coupled with a three-day weekend make it likely those additions won't be finalized before next Tuesday. Plouffe likely is being used as a one-year bridge at third base to make sure that highly rated third base prospect Matt Chap- man isn't rushed to the big leagues. Chapman hit 36 homers last year, 29 of them at Double-A Midland, and is a highly touted de- fensive player, but the A's would like to see him have most of a full season at Tri- ple-A Nashville to work on getting the rest of his game in big league shape. He av- eraged just .237 in the mi- nor leagues last year. So the A's are likely to have Plouffe at third, Yon- der Alonso at first base and use Ryon Healy, who had 20 doubles, 13 homers and a .305/.357/.524 half-sea- son as the third baseman last year, in multiple roles. Healy likely will enter spring training in platoon at first base with Alonso and spend time as the DH. As for Casilla, who lost his job as the San Fran- cisco Giants' closer last September, the A's like the depth he brings to the Oak- land bullpen and seem con- vinced he still throws hard enough to have an impact. The club isn't particularly interested in trading any of the other relievers, so the A's could go into spring training next month claim- ing the bullpen as its prime strength with closer Ryan Madson backed up by Hen- driks, Casilla, John Axford, Ryan Dull and the only lefty, Sean Doolittle. Gray will make $3.57 million after going through arbitration for the first time, a jump from his 2016 salary of $527,000. While that's a hefty raise, it's less than Gray might have ex- pected 12 months ago. Then he was coming off a 14-7, 2.73 season that had him third in the American LeagueCyYoungAwardbal- loting. But his performance took a major step back in 2016 as he fell to 5-11 with a 5.69 ERA that was more than 2.50 points above his previous worst ERA. Gray, who spent two different stints on the dis- abled list with right tra- pezius and right forearm strain issues, came into 2016 with back-to-back 14- win seasons and a 33-20 re- cord with a 2.88 ERA in his first two-plus seasons. His career ERA is now at 3.42. Hendriks appeared in 53 games in his first sea- son with the A's, putting together a 3.76 ERA while opponents averaged .270 while facing him. His num- bers improved after a stint on the disabled list due to a strained right triceps, put- ting together a 2.23 ERA and .222 opponents' ERA after returning. He came back on June 19 after miss- ing 39 games and went on to lower his ERA from 8.27 to its final 3.76. Vogt hit 14 homers and 56 RBI while putting to- gether a slash line of .251/.305/.406 and mak- ing the AL All-Star team for the second season run- ning. He had career bests with 123 hits, 30 doubles and 46 extra-base hits. A's FROM PAGE 1 By Elliott Almond BayAreaNewsGroup The Raiders have told NFL officials they have commitments from Gold- man Sachs to finance a pro- posed $1.9 billion Las Ve- gas stadium project even without the help of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. But the man helping the Las Vegas Stadium Author- ity develop a plan to bring the Raiders to Nevada said Friday many hurdles re- main before relocation can happen. "It is not one hurdle, it is a series of events, all of which have to take place in order to create a situa- tion where an NFL team could be playing in south- ern Nevada in 2020," said Jeremy Aguero of Applied Analysis. Aguero gave stadium authority board members a report on what Raiders executives discussed at the NFL meeting Wednes- day in New York. The Raid- ers' potential relocation to Las Vegas was the focus of the meeting of the league's stadium and finance com- mittees. Perhaps the most reveal- ing statement involved the willingness of global in- vestment banker Goldman Sachs to go forward even if a deal can't be reached with billionaire Adelson, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Adelson has been the primary force behind the Raiders' move to Las Vegas at a time the team's owner- ship has shown little inter- est in keeping the team in Oakland. Securing a solid finan- cial plan is one of the key steps in getting the pro- posed 65,000-seat domed stadium built. The cur- rent financial plan would include $750 million in Clark County hotel room tax revenue, $650 million from the Adelson family and $500 million from the Raiders and the NFL.
