Overthenextthree weeks we'll be taking a look at Galatians chapter 5 verses 16 through 26. You could ti- tle the whole series 'Bear- ing Fruit.' Today we'll be covering verses 16- 21 and we'll include vs 26 as part of the conversation on 'Bad Fruit.' The bible tells us that we all bear fruit. Whether we are saved, unsaved, male, female, old, or young. I have a great appreciation for how God has divided it up for us. There is good, bad, or fake fruit in this chapter. Paul spoke similarly in 1 Corinthians 9 using the il- lustration of running. There are those running to win, some who think they are in the race but they haven't crossed the start line, and others who think they'll be finishing 2nd when they are actually running in the wrong direction. Jesus in Revelation chap- ter 3 used the illustration of water temperature as either hot, cold, or luke- warm. There is another ex- ample from Paul in Ro- mans 12 as being all in. Ei- ther you are all in with your life in Christ, are holding back, or you are hoping that God doesn't see that you are holding back. These are very vivid illustrations that can help us to avoid being self-deceived. The illustration of fruit is one that I personally can relate to. The illustration of running, not so much as some of you may know. I do enjoy gardening as my fam- ily has had orchards for all of my life. I understand the concept of good fruit versus bad fruit. Fake fruit is a lit- tle trickier. Paul started with bad fruit in Galatians 5 :16. His instructions were to walk by the Spirit in order to be led by the Spirit. Why do we want to do that? So that we don't destroy one another, which is what Paul is warn- ing the church of in verse 15. It speaks of the desires of the flesh. They are con- trary to the Spirit, creating conflict inside of us as be- lievers. The Greek word for our flesh is 'sarx.' It refers to the sinful state of human be- ings that battle against our desire to be led by the Spirit of God. In Romans 7:15, Paul didn't say what he 'use to do,' but, "…what I am do- ing, I do not understand…" In Galatians 5:18, Paul said that they were not un- der the law. What law? Back to Romans 7:21 it says,"… the law that evil is present in me." When we are led by the Spirit, the evil that is re- ferred to as 'our flesh' is not evident in the ones verses 19-21 mentioned. By the way, when it says 'and the like' it refers to many, many more acts. If you're reading this, and you like me have witnessed those acts of the flesh in your own life, hopefully you have also witnessed acts of repentance. Being recon- ciled to God and to one an- other is very important. It's the difference between be- ing led by the Spirit or the flesh. It's serious enough that God says he won't hear your prayers if you're not obeying Him (Isaiah 59:1-2, Psalm 66:18, 1 Peter 3:12). If your bad fruit isn't con- fessed and cleansed day by day, it will pile up between you and Christ. It will dis- rupt your sweet commu- nion with the Him, grieve the Holy Spirit, hinder your prayers, discolor your tes- timony, and hurt those around you. That is why Je- sus instructs us to confess our sins to one another, and to ask and give forgiveness even if there hasn't been a confession on their part. I'm sure Paul agreed with Jeremiah's statement that hearts are deceitfully wicked. Paul himself con- fessed to be a 'wretched man.' He understood that apart from Christ's work, we would all be loving our neighbors, caring for the widows, taking in the or- phans, clothing the poor, sheltering the homeless, and feeding the hungry, all for the praise of man. There would be no glory to God, and it would all be in vain. Now, oh but now, we get to do those things for the sake of Christ and for His fame. Please join me next week for part two of Galatians chapter 5 where I will ad- dress good fruit. Brandonwasbornand raised in Tehama County. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA In the latest scandal involv- ing the powerful Russian Orthodox Church, author- ities in St. Petersburg on Thursday defended a con- troversial decision to give a city landmark cathedral to the church. Museum experts and lo- cals in Russia's former im- perial capital were rattled by the governor's announce- ment this week that he was transferring St. Isaac's Ca- thedral to the church. An online petition against that decision had tens of thousands of signatures by Thursday. The neoclassical church, completed in the 19th cen- tury, has been an important museum since Russia's 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and is now the city's third most visited site. Some museum experts are concerned that the Orthodox Church will neglect its exhibits, which include a rare Foucault pen- dulum. Mikhail Mokretsov, dep- uty governor of Russia's sec- ond-largest city, on Thurs- day vowed that the city hall will make sure that tourists get unfettered access to the site. He said the city will retain its ownership of the cathedral and will shoulder maintenance costs while the church will get operational rights. Church spokesman Vlad- imir Legoyda on Thursday assured the public that visi- tors will not even notice the difference when the church begins to operate St. Isaac's. "Nobody is going to limit the access to the cathedral," he told reporters. "It's in the church's interests to pre- serve museum heritage."
