Ithadrained1.9"when I emptied the rain gauge on Saturday morning, and continued to gently rain when we arrived at the fairgrounds for the 65th annual Tehama County Cattlemen's Winter Dinner. About 400 were pres- ent for Vic Woolery's de- licious prime rib dinner, and refreshments from the Red Bluff Elks Lodge #1250 bar. Many enjoyed sipping the different wines from Burnsini Vineyard and Cline Cellars, while others enjoyed sampling the dif- ferent olive oils from Lu- cero and Corning Olive Oil. The beautiful programs were designed by Terri Bu- chner Design Graphics and Walker Printing, LLC printed them. Members of Red Bluff FFA helped by serving the coffee from The Hu- man Bean, ice cream, and clearing the tables. Many thanks ladies and gentle- man. Pleased to have Califor- nia Cattlemen Association President David Daley, Ex- ecutive Vice President Billy Gatlin, and Lisa Pherigo, Director of Finance attend the dinner and successfully bidding on many of the si- lent auction items. Also present was Butte Co. CattleWomen President Paula Holden, and husband Dave. Steve Lambert, Past President of the American Hereford Association. Congratulations to Cathy Tobin being recog- nized with the honor "Te- hama County Cattlemen 'Man of the Year' for her helping to raise money for the youth in agriculture for the last ten years, as chairman of the Scholar- ship Fundraiser event. As past president Jerry Hemsted said "this lady missed her calling as an event coordinator" since Cathy and Tehama Co. CattleWomen's CowBelle of the Year Irene Fuller helped create the success- ful Beef 'n Brew. Cathy's Oak Knoll Her- efords will be one of the consignors at the 76th an- nual Red Bluff Bull Sale. She is past president of TCCW, and recycling as 2nd Vice President as well as Secretary for TCCA. In 2005, Joan Hemsted and Jean Barton were rec- ognized with the TCCA "Man of the Year" honors. Chad Amen, President of Tehama County Cat- tlemen introduced his of- ficers: Vice President Ron Humphrey, who do- nated the popular 8 hours of grading purchased by Roger Nicholson, 2016 Man of the Year and the 8 hours of small dozer work purchased by Red Bank Farms. Secretary Cathy Tobin, Treasurer Cindy Brown-Hamilton. Richard Buchner, chair of scholar- ship committee. Directors are Bryce Borror, Andy Cox, Wally Roney, Dave Stroing, Adam Davy, Steve McCar- thy, Mike McCluskey, Jeff White and Steve Zane. They helped set up the ta- bles and chairs, plus get- ting the silverware, po- dium, hanging the tradi- tional banner welcoming members and guests. As Anne Owens was quoted in the Daily News, "Thank you to all of you for supporting the Tehama County CattleWomen and Tehama County Cattle- men." The live auction bids were $15,710 and the silent auction resulted in $4,655 for the 2017 scholarships. The 2016 Scholarship winners were recognized, and Will Macdonald, Bai- ley Brownfield, Jenny Mc- Cluskey and Daphne Nan- dino were present, helping to get live auction buyers autographs. Other schol- arships were awarded to Emily Andreini, Jase Northrup, Stacy Stroing, Jessica Macdonald, Carson Lewis and Savanna Miller. The wild gooseberry jelly from the Stroing Ranch, perhaps in memory of Barbara Frost Kloose since she always donated it for the auction, resulted in a bidding duel between Brad Peek and Anne Ow- ens. They split the cost and jars of jelly. Patty Kelly's peanut brit- tle was always a favorite of Arlo Stroing, and this year his grandson-in-law Martin Mattila was the buyer. Bill Borror's beautiful hand-crafted black wal- nut coffee table was again, a top seller. The two loads of road base donated by Charlie Mueller Trucking and Valley Rock were pur- chased by Keith Thornton. The I-5 Tire Factory set of 4 Cooper tires was pur- chased by Bryan Owens. HighSchoolRodeo This weekend at the Pauline Davis Pavilion and Bull Sale Arena is the High School Rodeo "Shoot-out" with contes- tants from District 1, 2, 3, 5. Last year there were 275 competitors, with 148 barrel racers and 70 team ropers. The following week on Friday, January 20th start- ing at 4 p.m. in Pauline Davis Pavilion will be 26 ranch rodeo teams in the J P Ranch Rodeo, return- ing the next morning at 10 a.m. with the finals Satur- day evening. Last year TNT Cat- tle Co.; Chiloquin, Ore- gon won the team, Daniel Rice was Top Hand, Craig Boyd with "Mouse" had Top Horse. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., will be another mem- ory of past Red Bluff Bull Sales when "Roots & Boots" comes to the State Theatre. Sammy Kershaw, Pam Tillis and Collin Raye will be on stage. Bill Cor- nelius explained the pric- ing in his column, Jan. 11. 1946 Bull Sale More notes from the 1946 Daily News Bull Sale Edition. "County Leader. The name is Don Smith. His job, county agent. His im- portance, terrific. If Te- hama county has a more important citizen than Don Smith he is un- known to the general pub- lic. County fair, bull sale, round-up, Klamath weed, heel fly, bigger and bet- ter fruit-whatever problem comes up involving the food producers. Don is in there punching. Photo: Give them the credit. As the newspapers say, these gents are, left to right (as usual) C. S. Wat- son, committeeman and highly successful cattle- man out Flournoy way; Sam Ayer, who once was a committeeman, now is a county supervisor, still a cattleman and, as a side issue, boss of these there fairgrounds; C. S. Sto- ver, chairman of the cat- tlemen's association and highly regarded here- abouts, and that goodlook- ing man, Roy Owens, com- mitteeman, cattleman, for- mer leader of the famed Red Bluff Round-up and as well known a stockman as Tehama county has. Photo: "On the com- mittee. T. J. McKerras, a leader in any event that in- volves good beef cattle." Photo: "A Veteran. In the stock business Char- lie Luther is an oldtimer, a community leader and a member of the committee. Photo: "Count on him. Imagine Jack Wing, chair- man of the county wool- growers association, being important in a Hereford event. Well, he is. He puts the cattle through the ring in record time. "Here are the boys. A typical crowd at a Red Bluff Hereford sale. They're bigger now, as this picture was taken in 1943. The cattlemen come for the two Ps — Pleasure and Profit. With more high class Herefords than be- fore with improved fa- cilities and demand, this sale will top them all." The photo showed a large group of men seated by a sale ring, with not a woman in sight. "Dave Minch, slaugh- ter-house operator who purchased 20,000 head of beef cattle last year, re- ported recently that sales such as this have aided greatly in building up the quality of Hereford beef in the past few years, and at the same time have helped cattle growers put a con- siderable amount of added meat on each head." JEANBARTON Winter dinner a success CONTRIBUTED Future cattleman Clayton Borror with his grandfather, Kevin and future cattlewoman Penelope Bengard with her father Bardin were among the attendees at the 65th annual Winter Dinner hosted by the Tehama County Cattlemen and CattleWomen.
