During the opening ceremony, Council Member Bill Crisp, retired Army Command Sergeant Major, read a proclamation from the Mayor honoring all Veterans, with special recognition to those serving during World War II. Mayor Nat Robertson said: "The City of Fayetteville works tirelessly to support Veterans through programs like the Homeless Veterans Initiative and partnering with the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center on different projects." The City is honored to have the following Veterans - Council Member Crisp, Council Member Jim Arp, Council Member Ted Mohn, Council Member Chalmers McDougald, Council Member Larry Wright and Council Member Kirk deViere - serving on the City Council. The City and residents honor Veterans of all decades through the N.C. Veterans Park, which was funded by the State of North Carolina for approximately $14 million and overseen by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation, lending to the community's motto of "History, Heroes, a Hometown Feeling."
