The North Carolina Department of Health and Human
Services has awarded a $300,000 grant to the Cumberland County
Department of Public Health for the Adolescent Parenting
Program.
The goals of the Adolescent Parenting Program, which serves
pregnant or parenting teens age 19 and younger, are to increase
self-sufficiency, delay a subsequent pregnancy and increase
graduation rates. The program also aims to improve the welfare
and school readiness for children of teen parents and increase
positive parenting.
The health department will be receive $75,000 annually for four
years, beginning June 1 through May 31, 2017. However, funding
is contingent upon the availability of funds as determined by the
N.C. General Assembly.
The program is coordinated by a full-time staff member and
includes home visits and peer group education sessions. A full-
time staff member would be added to the health department.
Cumberland County was targeted for funding based on its five-year
average teen pregnancy rate from 2009-2013, which ranked 12th
highest in the state.
