ByJoeKay TheAssociatedPress CINCINNATI AndyDaltonthrew three touchdown passes and played lead blocker in a near- perfect performance that kept the Bengals unbeaten. Dalton connected with tight end Tyler Eifert for three scores and played the role of blocker on Mohamed Sanu's reverse for a touchdown, setting up Cincinna- ti's 31-10 victory over the Cleve- land Browns on Thursday night. The Bengals improved to 8-0 for the first time in franchise history, their longest winning streak within a season. Coming off an emotional 16- 10 victory in Pittsburgh on Sun- day that gave them control of the AFC North, the Bengals dom- inated the Browns (2-7) and Johnny Manziel in the second half. Manziel had some of his best moments in the opening half, which ended with Cincinnati up only 14-10. In the second half, the Browns managed only 32 yards and two first downs. It was a night for the Bengals to show how far they've come in a year. And no one has improved more than Dalton, who had his worst showing — a 2.0 passer rating — during a 24-3 loss to the Browns during a Thursday night game at Paul Brown Sta- dium last November. He threw touchdown passes of 9 and 2 yards to Eifert in the first half, the latter after a Browns penalty kept a drive alive. By Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group Take a heavy dose of specu- lation, mix it with a little com- mon sense and the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 could be Cal's Jared Goff. That's how Rob Rang, an in- sider for NFL Draft scout, sees it. The day before the 49ers an- nounced Colin Kaepernick would be replaced this week by Blaine Gabbert, Rang had the 49ers se- lecting Goff at No. 5 overall in a mock draft for CBS sports.com "Obviously the 49ers are look- ing at options other than Colin Kaepernick at this point," Rang said Wednesday. "If their season continues as it is, they could have a top-five pick and that's what it would take to get one of the top quarterbacks this year, includ- ing Goff." Whether Goff, or other college quarterbacks deemed worthy of first-round status such as Pax- ton Lynch of Memphis or Con- nor Cook of Michigan State, ends up with the 49ers is a slow-de- veloping drama which will play out over the next several months. Under general manager Trent Baalke, the 49ers have drafted 48 players since taking Kaeper- nick in the second round (No. 36 overall) in 2011 and none of them have been a quarterback. By Jimmy Durkin Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA Derek Carr is thriving under pressure the way few young quarterbacks — or any quarter- back for that matter — have in re- cent memory. The Oakland Raiders' sec- ond-year signal caller leads the NFL with a passer rating of 131.8 against blitzes, according to the football analysis website Pro Foot- ball Focus. His rating is 36.7 bet- ter facing a blitz then not, the highest positive gap in the league by a wide margin. Seven of Carr's 15 touchdown passes and nearly 40 percent of his yards have come against a blitz, despite teams sending ex- tra defenders less than 30 percent of the time. "It's something that we put a lot of effort and work into," Carr said. "It's definitely something that we want to make sure we can handle because as I've learned through past experiences from me not even playing, but watching other people play, you can't complete balls when you're on your back." By Jenna Fryer The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. His appeals re- jected, Matt Kenseth defiantly vowed Thursday to race as he al- ways has and accused NASCAR of "unfairly" making an example out of him with a two-race sus- pension for intentionally wreck- ing Joey Logano over the week- end at Martinsville. Kenseth will miss the next two races, at Texas and Phoenix, and is eligible to return for the Nov. 22 season finale at Homestead- Miami Speedway. The national motorsports appeals panel de- nied Kenseth's appeal Thursday and a few hours later so did final appeals officer Bryan Moss, who did reduce Kenseth's probation from six months until the end of this year. Kenseth said he was "unfairly made the example" because NAS- CAR had no clear rule on what the penalties are for intentionally wrecking another driver in an act of retaliation. "I am not going to change who I am, I'm not going to change what I stand for, I'm not going to change how I race," Kenseth said.
